After searching a bit, I like the tire height of the 255/50-17 much better than the usual 245/45-17.

But what I am seeing is that some tires of this size tend to be sport truck designs.
The literature seems to point towards a more robust tire, but with better handling in a low profile tire.

Any input or discoveries on this???
And yes there are some performance tires in this category

Tirerack 255/50-17
thanks

the 94-96 Impala SS had the 255/50/17 as OE. My friend runs the same tire on his R/T. I think, that although, that is alot of sidewall for our cars, with a load index of about 101 or so there shouldnt be too much sidewall flex on that tire. Personally, i prefer a 245/45/17, after years of running it, im used to and prefer the short sidewall. Falken makes a Zeix in 245/45/17 with a 99 load index, almost all of the other manufacturers have a 95 index except for Nitto with runs an 89, that seems to be too overloaded.

Check out the Fuzion ZRi, its made by Bridgestone/Firestone and is supposed to be a great tire.

I think I had found that with a 17" wheel you ended up with nearest to stock tire height with the 255/50/17. the only problem is that you are right, very hard to find. I very seriously thought about buying GoodYear Wrangler F1's for my car wehn I got my current tires and wheels. This is their max performance truck tire and it came in sizes I liked better than car tires did. I was really hung up on having Wrangler on the side of the tires on my car though since everyone knows that is the truck tire name so I didn't do it. It doesn't seem like a bad idea to me though if you can get the size you like in a nice tire. I ended up going with the 18's in the back just to get the tire height right. I have 4.10's and have a pretty accurate speedo that way, you see guys running short rear tires and 3.73's that want 22 tooth speedo gears, my combo calculates to needing a 21.4, making the 21 the best one.

The only reason they refer them as a truck tire is because they are so big most cars could possibly run them, with all those imports running around on a 195/50-15 :uppoint:
