It makes contact with multiple parts and is off by about 3/8"--I just want to get the car back together and rather than bother with customer service I thought I could just hit one small area with the grinder and I'd be done. The more I ground the more needed to be ground. It doesn't fit, and while it has gotten closer, it's still not close. Grinding material from a part bought to brace is counterproductive, but I'm not going to grind on the cover itself.

It became apparent I wasn't going to just easily remedy this. I contacted their customer support on Thursday, sent them pictures. Haven't heard a word in return. I don't know what they'll do. I'm sure they probably aren't impressed with my grinder work, but it plainly does not fit, and I haven't done anything to make it fit less.

Anyone dealt with this? I see these mentioned on the forum in several places.

I'm wondering if that brace is made for the newer style cover. The 8.8 had a couple of different style covers, last was updated in 1994.

I have to dig up some pictures.

Edit: Check out the pictures in this post. You can see the differences in the covers, this might be your problem. Your style cover is in the second picture, you can see the rib where it's up against the brace.

He steeda diff brace is meant for Mustang Cobras. There were 2 different diff covers used on our cars, one with a part number that begins with E9, which you have, and then later years had a cover that begins with F4, which happens to be the same cover the Mustangs used. For that brace to work, you will need to find an F4 diff cover. Here is a link with pics showing the differences in the covers.

Well that's not Steeda's fault at all then. I wish everything with these cars wasn't so convoluted!

Apparently my donor differential is older than 1994. The one on the car is F4LW-4033-AA so I guess I'll put my grinder away and use that cover.

Not necessarily, My 94 had the E9 cover stock. From our collective findings there wasn't any difinitive rhyme or reason as to which got what when, Ford seemingly made design revisions at random and then tossed the new ones into a giant bin right with the old ones, then the assembly line workers picked whichever out at random.

I went with the Ford Racing IRS girdle; it's a much more stout piece, and it requires very little trimming to fit if using the Performance art works diff mount.

While I admire your dedication, I have no use for, or desire to own a $265 differential cover at this time. It looks great, and if I was making more power and doing more drag racing I'd definitely consider it. I got the brace for just $110, seemed like cheap insurance.

But that no use/no desire goes triply for a $300 differential mount. Seriously, someone charges $300 for that??? Is there something I'm missing about this? Lots of R&D expenses to recoup? Made of some exotic material? Coated in gold on the other side?

Fair enough, this is why we have capitalism lol. It's $265 of glory; the whole cover is 1/2" thick at the minimum, and has loads of supporting ears. It bolts right onto our pumpkins trouble free and also sports a...DRAIN PLUG! That feature alone was worth $100 to me lol. Couple that with the load bolts to ensure the stability of the main caps during high-load situations, and the provisions for a differential oil cooler (this sucker has 4 oil ports, one for drain/fill and another set for oil cooler intake and exit.

Oh and to explain the differential mount, $300 isn't too bad considering materials, labor, and powder-coating costs/dimensions. If you have a serious MN-12 such as myself, it's worth it considering this is what happened to my factory differential mount... I'll let the picture speak for itself.



Some things are worth the money, regardless if it makes sense or not. I learned a long time ago that you gotta pay to play. It may not always be cost effective or seem like the appropriate price, but screw it. I didn't have to make it and it solves my problems; worth every penny.

So are you running a diff cooler and changing your fluid that frequent? :D

I know you get off on writing big checks but there are always other solutions, even if one is spending $10 on stock junkyard diff mounts 30 times lol
Currently, no; having the option to is nice. I change my diff fluid every 50k, and it's annoying enough to have to remove the rear cover that this is worth it. I don't write big checks for junk; also I am a problem solver, not a money waster, I'm not going to buy the same item 30 times just to know its ultimate fate already lol. Being proactive vs. dumbactive.

I'm not questioning your strategy but it's not the only one, there are stronger factory rear diff mounts that can be found if you know what to look for that may never break like yours did for the same $10 I mentioned, it won't be as strong as the one you bought of course, but if something solves the same problem for less cost, and fits the needs of the car in question that's being smartactive :D

Found on what? There has to be a middle ground here.

The more I think about it, the more preposterous selling that thing for $300 seems. I might buy in at $150, definitely would at $75, which seems more like the real world price for something like that. How many has that place sold? Ten? Good profit margin anyhow.

The thicker one is E9SC-4B425-BC

Id rather be a smart ass than a dumbass.

Hey its all relative, the piece was built for a Mustang afterall, and people who dont own 20 year old cars tend to be less frugal.

Only the cover is designed for Mustangs, and the newest Mustang the cover would fit is now 12 years old, and it's less expensive than the mount, which only fits one of our POSs, and generally there's a bigger case to be made for having a strong cover than a strong mount based on typical failures.

I plan to buy a better cover when I install 4.10s because, like the OP, I only have E9 covers, so rather than purchasing both a used stock F3/F5 one + the brace I just do that, but it'll be attached to the cheap but fat E9 mount. :)
