Recently a clunk started in the suspension (surprised, eh?), coupled with a little play in the steering wheel. Then recently I noticed while at a stoplight, only when the brake was pressed, I could hear a repetitive clunking noise from under the hood. Turning the steering wheel with the brake on and car running also produced the same noise.

Is that the steering box? The car is a 95 T-Bird with 165k miles.

Thanks in advance,
Al

Could be alot of things at 165k miles.

I'd take a look at everything in the front end.

Usually clunking is balljoints. Play in the wheel could be tie rods.

All of the above are huge safety items, I'd take a look at it right away.

I don't think it has anything to do with the brakes.

With the clunking sound happening with the car sitting still, I was thinking something with the power steering system was clunking?

It actually doesnt make much noise to speak of while going over bumps, just a little when turning slow, and there is a wee bit of play in the steering.

Thanks,
Al
