Ok, I posted on this before and was told to get the system presurized. But I don't want to go and pay that money yet. If there is a way for me to do it, let me know. But I was wondering where it would leak from. I have gone all around the front of the engine checking the hoses and on the sides also. I parked over a concrete surface and let it run for a while, then let it sit for a while, but found no drippings. So it is only doing this once it really warms up and it is moving. Now when I notice it leaking it is dripping on to the exhaust. What in the back of the engine would leak? I checked the heater core hoses right behind the intake and the parts that I can see/touch are good. So what else is back there? I'm losing about an inch out of the overflow tank a day. And when I accelerate hard after it has warmed up there is a large cloud of smoke behind me where the coolant is hitting the exhaust. does anyone have any ideas?

Oh, and I can occasionally smell the coolant burning, but I think that is because I have the A/C or the windows down.

Hey my buddy had a bird, a 3.8 now I know it is different, but bare with me here. Just before his head gasket blew, he was losing coolant into his exhaust. The only reason I am bringing this up is just in case. Check your oil and stuff and make sure there is nothing there. If you can catch it before it would help. ALso the frost plugs might be leaking, like was stated before.

A couple of other people mentioned that it could be the freeze plugs. Where would they be and what would be the best way to see them? Also, could I do fix this myself without dropping the tranny or pulling the engine?

Thanks a lot guys,

Preston,

I posted this over on MTC as well. Pressurize your cooling system while the motor is cool and look until you find where the water is comig from. It has to be coming from somewhere and the somewhere has to be visable while it's leaking

Thanks TimB, I was just hoping someone had some ideas before I had to spend any money. Can I pressurize the system myself? Or do I have to get a shop to do it? If it is leaking from inside the bellhousing where would it come out from? THanks a lot,

Most auto stores have a tool to pressurize the system....it's just a radiator cap with a hand air pump on it. I don't know if they make one with the type of "cap" we have though. If it is coming from the rears it would be leaking out the bottom of the bellhousing where the inspection plate is.

the freeze plugs in the back of the block are behind the trans bellousing. To replace them, the trans has to be removed. My car was mysteriously loosing coolant of over a year and never a drop hit the ground! When I had Dennis install my trans is when we found it. Was rotted out pretty good and was probably just about to totally let go. Was real lucky I guess! Good thing it lasted until I made the 350 mile trip to his shop!!

i try to refill my coolant and the low level indicator light are still on but the expansion tank not allowed me to add anymore or it will just boil over with the cap off.

Run the motor and let it move the antifreeze.

well, today morning i just paid $60++ at those jiffy lube place to change out my "brand new" coolant(ouch...) and all air being bleed out, low level indicator are not lid on anymore and i'm happy about it. but one thing that concerned me is that they are using tap water around the shop to mix the coolant....
should i worry about this??? also suspecting the engine blown the head gasket. just see how long this coolant will hold. by the way a new explorer motor is already in plan, so not really worry about this engine anymore. just toast my alternator today. wonder if the alternator on my engine will fit directly onto the new explorer motor because i'm getting a 200 amp unit...

You know this subject has been covered her a hundred time at least. Could have saved you some cash doing a search. Or you could have went to the tech articles as there is something there.

Ok, here's an update. I put the car up on ramps today to check out the underside of the car. Before I went under I filled the coolant resevoir up with water and ran the engine. I goosed the throttle a bit and away it leaked. It was leaking pretty good so I slid under and had a look. It was leaking from behind the crank pulley and running onto the oil pan. Here is a pic...

Does this sound like the water pump? I guess it was running behind the pulley because of the way it was angled. If this is the water pump how do I replace it? I've never done that before so if someone could give me a quick step by step I would greatly appreciate it.
