A hundred years after the original sank an Aussie multi-billionaire is going to build a full size modern replica of the original.

Billionaire promises to build Titanic II by 2016
Australian billionaire Clive Palmer planning high-tech replica of original cruise liner

CANBERRA, Australia — An Australian billionaire said Monday he'll build a high-tech replica of the Titanic at a Chinese shipyard and its maiden voyage in late 2016 will be from England to New York, just like its namesake planned.

Weeks after the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the original Titanic, Clive Palmer announced Monday he has signed a memorandum of understanding with state-owned Chinese company CSC Jinling Shipyard to build the Titanic II.

"It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic, but ... will have state-of-the-art 21st-century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems," Palmer said in a statement. He called the project "a tribute to the spirit of the men and women who worked on the original Titanic."

More than 1,500 people died after the Titanic hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic on its first voyage. It was the world's largest and most luxurious ocean liner at the time.

Palmer built a fortune on real estate on Australia's Gold Coast tourist strip before becoming a coal mining magnate. BRW magazine reported he was Australia's fifth-richest person last year with more than 5 billion Australian dollars ($5.2 billion).

Palmer said at a news conference that previous attempts to build a Titanic replica failed because proponents failed to raise enough money and commission a shipyard. The Titanic II is the first of four luxury cruise ships Palmer has commissioned CSC Jinling Shipyard to build.

Palmer did not provide a cost estimate. He said he had established a new shipping company, Blue Star Line Pty. Ltd., and that design work for the Titanic II has begun with assistance from a historical research team.

The diesel-powered ship will have four smoke stacks like the coal-powered original, but they will be purely decorative.

The most obvious changes from the original Titanic would be below the water line, including welding rather than rivets, a bulbous bow for greater fuel efficiency and enlarged rudder and bow thrusters for increased maneuverability, Palmer said.

Brett Jardine, general manager for Australia and New Zealand in the industry group International Cruise Council, said Titanic II would be small by modern standards but could prove viable at the top end of the luxury market.

"From a marketing point of view, many will embrace it and perhaps there'll be some that wouldn't," Jardine said.

"If you've got a niche, it's going to work. Why go out there and try to compete with the mass market products that are out there now?" he added.

While the Titanic II would carry around 1,680 passengers, most modern cruise ships create economies of scale by catering for more than 2,000 passengers, he said.

Among the world's largest passenger ships, Allure of the Seas is 90 meters (295 feet) longer than the 270-meter (886-foot) Titanic and has 2,700 cabins.

Seems serious enough, wow!! I wasn't sure if it was a gag or joke, but it seems real!

One thing is for certain - if he finishes it and it survives its maiden voyage, it will certainly be a tourist magnet!

So it is a Chinese knock-off of the Titanic, and they expect better results than the original? Interesting.

"The completed ship will travel from Shanghai to London, escorted by the Chinese navy.

It will travel from London to New York on its first passenger voyage."

I guess our friends across the pond are cool with that . Or just like us "Just read about it " :D
Interesting ... lol Probably more like "Just read about it"

Why the need (or desire) for a military escort?

pfft ... 2016 is a long ways off. Anything can happen between now and then ...

Sounds like someone has too much money and not enough brain cells, than again isn't that the case with everyone that has mass amounts of money. Let's build a ship that failed over 100 years ago, to hell with cancer and the people starving to death those are poor people problems *end rant*

The original Titanic was the Olympic and it never sank in its 25 years of service.:D

The whole Titanic and related ocean liners sinking is so overrated. It happens when they're plowed into immovable objects or get blown up by U boats.

This work will help staving familys in China get some work so in a way it is helping peoples lives. It would also be super funny to see another one go down like the planets biggest "I told you" so going on. But I doubt its going anywhere near the north atlantic.

No I didnt I spent the day away from the computer, seriously I will laugh so hard once it sinks right nexxt to the old one. The world never learns... I never cared for the story of the first Titanic, the band played on as every sunk to their frozen watery graves.

I think it will be a great tribute, and I hope that the builder is seriously building it as a tribute and not a publicity stunt. I also hope that the name does not curse the new ship to the old one's fate.

It seems to me to be more a publicity stunt than a tribute.

I have mixed feelings about this one but I think ultimately they should let sleeping dogs - or in this case - ships lie.

When James Cameron made the movie I was very disappointed to see the deaths of so many romanticized.

My grandmother and her mother traveled to America from England just two weeks after the Titanic sank and I remember her telling me the story of how there were so many on their ship who had lost family members on the Titanic. When their ship arrived at the approximate location of the sinking they held a memorial service and those who lost friends and relatives threw flowers and personal mementos onto and into the water in memory of their loved ones.

As iconic as the ship itself was it's a real shame that the passengers are so often disregarded.

This billionare is going to bank I think the romance of death is an odd one. Remember the civil war reenactors are a bit of this type. I used to find the old uniforms interesting too dont get me wrong and so I think people will find this interesting in the same way completely forgetting it was the high death toll that made this famous in the first place.

This is a retro classic design... 21st century shipbuilding tech w/ the fascade of an early 20th century vehicle.

Kinda like the last gen tbird, the S197 mustang, or some of those crazy coachbuilt porsches.
