Anybody else having problems with stress cracks behind the rear seat? I have a 1993 T-Bird and about a year ago I had on both sides behind the back seat about 9 inches up and about an1-1/2 from the wheel wells a crack on each side about 2 inches long. I drilled a hole on each end to stop the spreading of the crack and filled it in with seam sealer. About a year ago the brace that is behind the rear seat broke at the top on both ends. I reinforced it with 1/8 inch metal and about a week ago I noticed a noise. I checked it out and behind the rear seat where that brace comes down in the center and bolts to a bracket tack welded to the body broke loose. Now I have to get someone to weld it. Anybody have this problem and any ideas to stop this from happening. You can really fill the car twist when going over bumps like speed bumps. Oen to any input.

get a rear strut tower brace installed and the problem will go away. either way you still need to fix those first.

Even with a STB, the L braces from a fold down seat will help as they connect the floor to the rear deck. Best part is they are bolt-in.

I have heard that the "L" brackes are much stronger bracing than the "V" brace. But I'd like to put a "V" brace back in just for a little extra though. And I've seen several times that the "L" brackets are bolt in. I got a set when I was going to put in my fold down rear seat, and there were no holes of any kind, anywhere near the location the brackets should have bolted to. I was going to drill some till I remembered what was right below the seat. I had them welded in instead. Of course, I have a 97 model. Perhaps Ford thought it would be pointless to drill the holes for braces that weren't going to be installed.

There are no holes in the floor. There are studs already there for the seat belts. Simply remove the nuts, put in the brace, and put the nuts back on.

I suppose that could work to. But when I test fit the braces, the holes in the braces didn't even come close to the seatbelts (not that I recall). So I bolted the upper portion of the "L" in place, and had the lower portion of the "L" welded where it fit best.

Hmm, look on your firewall too. I found one right above the opening where the heater water pipes go through. I drilled it, and hopefully put an end to that.

They bolted right in for mine, maybe its because you have a 97.

i noticed today that i have two stress cracks underneath my rear seat same as the OP.

I think its pretty serious because I'm getting a rattling from underneath the rear by the location of the cracks. I just discovered it a few hours ago, tomorrow when I get off of work i'm going to pull the car up on stands and check it out.

just for comparison this is on my 92 351 5spd.. im going to check my 3 supercoupes as soon as i have time.

same cracks here, one on each side going down into the seats. going back the along the wheel wells. V brace was split in half on the drivers side, and it has almost completely broke the bracket loose from the floor board. Just finished putting in the L brackets and gonna try to find something to reinforce the wheel wells back to the floor board. Its also starting to show stress cracks along the C pillers near the trunk. The paint is all cracking away in that aria. Saw a few with cracks out in the junk yard as well.

Why not strip everything out and weld up the seams?
