I have a J-Modded 94 4R70W in my T'Bird's "remains" ...

I will (eventually) be installing a AOD-E behind the 351C in my 73 Cougar...

Would the internals of the 4R70W be able to be installed in the AOD-E? (I'm mainly interested in the gear ratios) :2huh:

Have I mentioned that automatic transmissions and trying to figure out what will and won't "fit" gives me a headache!!!:bawling:

The 4R gearset will swap dirrectly into the AODE case. I reccomend that you upgrade to the newest VB that will fit the case. I assume you are using a stand alone controler, so at that point I don't think electronics choice matters - not very clear on that point as I have not installed a computer of such yet.

Maybe you are considering a Manual VB, then it really doesn't matter what electronics are on the VB - and for all that matters you could use an AOD case and MVB.

When you do the swap just make sure you swap the ENTIRE gear train and bearings. The torrington bearings at the rear past the planet are specific to 4R70W.

Thanks.

I'm in the early stages of planning right now, so it's a long way off. But since I have the good 4R70W (and probably can't give it way, since it's a 94 case... :( ) I figured I would put it's innards to good use. :D

I'll be using the Baumannator TCS (tm) (http://www.becontrols.com/) to controll it since I have only heard very good things about them.

Thanks again for the reply... I was beginning to wonder if the resident tranny guru's were just ignoring me. :(

It is our busy season...I have 5 trans sitting here at my shop. But only being a home builder with a day job and family...things just have to take time - which is good, but some days I wish I could work on my own **** for a change :( but.....it is my fualt I am swampped anyway, so I really can't complain. :)

You question is relitively old anyhow, that info can be found on many sites - but I still get the question about 2 a month. The swap is very easy as well.

As for using the 94 - yeah, it might be cheap and available, but I would highly suggest you put a MechOWC from a 98+ 4R and a truck dirrect drum - that Cleavland might out torque the 1994 4R components :(

IMHO, you should just invest in a 2000+ 4.2L 4R70W from the yard or new even. It will save you much time and money over trying to converter and upgrade. But don't take my word for it.....just saying :)

My 94 is "supposed" to have the "goodies" from the tech article (mechanical diode, better accumulators, newer valvebody, etc.) so that's why I was leaning towards using those internals. I just don't remember the exact parts numbers. I'm pretty sure I just used the part numbers from the tech article. I know they tranny shop didn't do any machine work, but they hopefully installed all the new Ford parts I gave them.

I have a Paxton for the 351C (only planning 4 - 6 lbs boost), so I didn't think a 4R70W from the smaller engines (3.8/4.2L) would handle the torque.

But if they can be built to handle it, then I would VERY much prefer to just get the transmission and upgrade it without swapping internals to the AODE case.

I bet you will find the sun gear on that 94 transmission pretty mangled and it will likely need new bushings throughout.

Why a AOD-E? Why not just use a 3.8L/5.0L 4r70w Case and swap the internals or build up one?

I'll venture a guess it's because the bolt pattern is different on the vast majority of 4rs out there... and the '94 internals are "free".

But i don't beleive a newer VB will even fit an AOD-E Case.
And any 3.8L 4r will bolt to an old style 351C.. just won't last long without being beefed up.

Bingo! :D

I have access to cases all day long from my buddy that owns a transmission shop. :D

Thanks for all the feedback. I think what I'll do is open the case of the 94 4R70W and take a gander at the condition of the internals. Then based on the condition and type I'll then decide to go with a beefed up 4.2L 4R70W or put the free internals into a AOD-E case and just "run it and see".

The Cougar sees VERY little usage and if I grenade the transmission, it's not like I would be walking to work. :D

Thanks again for the info/suggestions.

Yeah, but I bet that right foot gets a whole lot heavier in the Cougar. Not near as much fun romping down on the Aspire. ;)

Just a thought but wasn't the 302/351 bolt pattern (and a pushrod V8) available in the Explorer up until like 99? Don't know if it was a 4r or 5r....

Actually it was available through the 2001 model. I am pretty sure they did use the 4R70W.

that is all true....the 5.0 4R was used till 01 - hard to come by, but worth having if you can find it. They swapped to the 4R/5r after that. Which is really too bad, since the 5R is a POS - I see more trouble with them than anything else....mainly cause SMALL internals in little case and people try to use the trans like a truck. FOrd should have kept the big trans in the explorer.
