i was thinking about swapping in a t-56 6 speed into my bird but what i want to know is if it will fit almost right in without modification like the t-45 from 99 mustangs will( no modification except for shifter extension box...)

A mustang T56 will put the shifter in the same place as a mustang T45. That being said, it is possible to modify the shifter handle and console top to be able to not use a shifter box. One question I have is whether the 03-04 cobra trans uses a cable for the clutch or a hydraulic system. If it is hydraulic, that would probably make this a pretty simple swap.

It's cable but it would not much different than all of us have done with the T-45 swaps plus it will bolt right up to the 4.6. The Mustang didn't have a hydraulic clutch system until 05

Ok, so pretty much we are looking at the exact same deal as my T45 swap only with a different trans.

-SC master
-Chevy S10 slave bolted to side of trans
-modify shifter handle and console top
-find/have made a driveshaft the right length
Does the 03 cobra T56 use the same type of setup for the speedometer as the 4R70? If so, I think we just found the easiest way to 6 gears.

What exactly did you do to the console top?

I removed the VMM and cut out the bar that goes across underneath it, then at the front of the console top I cut out a section of it about 4" wide by 3" back, and then I took a stock mustang shifter handle and lengthened the center section by about 3" then cut off the part where it turns back upwards, then I used a die to rethread the part of the handle that was now the top, and put a T-handle on it. Eventually I was planning to do some fiberglass work to fill in where the auto shifter was and smooth out the square where the VMM was so it would look better, but as far as having the shifter function, that is all you would need to do. I had mine like thaf for about a year. Only reason it is down now is that I somehow managed to chew up 3rd and 4th gears in the trans, and I'm not even sure if the car is worth putting another trans in it cause it needs paint and body and interior work, and still has a bone stock 4.6 in it.

I wasn't aware of that. Only thing I can think of is changing to a different instrument cluster, maybe make one out of a mustang work. Unless there is a way to change that in the trans.
