i know that the "W" means wide ratio, which is the gear ratio between the 1st to 2nd gear shift, the "4" means 4 speed, but im not sure what the "7" means yet

4R70W is 4 speeds, rear wheel drive, 700 foot pounds of torque handling Wide ratio.

Does that have anything to do with
47
W
on the tailshaft? I don't know, I have never looked for markings or anything on one.

Can anyone verify that 70=700 ft/lbs? I have heard many times that the higher the number, the stronger the tranny but this is the first time I have seen that the number actually means a specific rating.

I can't find my reference. I looked it up and didn't stop at "it is on the Internet, that means it is true", but I don't remember where I found it.

4R100 is 1000
5R55W is 550

That is input to transmission from TC, so that is closer to 500 ft pounds engine torque output for the 4R70W
