Ford can't kill off the Mustang cause it's "america's favorite muscle car" :leftright In all reality, they need to keep it around for those diehard fanatics, but stop passing up better cars in the domestic market. Keep the mustang around, but start actually producing all the better concepts, then Ford would have their Mustang niche - nostalgia, and actual performance and inginuity in everything else

Uh, get your facts straight. It's GM no profits, Ford small profits, Chrysler doing ok.

It's not even a muscle car, it's a pony car and there is a difference. The Mustang was the first (duh), the Camaro, Firebird, and Dart also fall into the Pony car category.

I know, that was my point... the mustang is a marketing gimmick, not a muscle car. Hell, the first mustangs or tbirds (I can't think of which right now) were made to compare with the 'vette. Look at the vette now compared with the bird or mustang

That would be the Thunderbird that was first created to compete with the Corvette, although not quite the way most people imagine it. It was created to be a more upscale two-seater, V8, roll-up windows, etc. Unlike the Corvette at the time that had a 6cyl and plastic side curtains. It was designed to be a "Luxurious sports car".

Thats all i hear is mustang this mustang that, good gosh! When I try to talk to people about moding my car. They say " why waste you time and money on your T bird" I look at them like you just dont understand at all. Because its an art in its own class!
I remember hearing when the announcement came on the news aobut the ending productions of thunderbirds somewhere in 96 97 ugh awful mistak in my opion, T birds are a class of their own!

I hear ya (only replace T-Bird with Cougar). It takes some actual smarts to mod these cars. Not just another armpit mustang where everything is already there.

Actually I read that last year GM had a 18% decrease in sales and Ford had a 7% decrease. Chrysler had an increase of 23%. GM is definetly not killing them.

I couldn't agree more, Ford needs to focus on designing other " muscular type" cars instead of just the stang.

Despite the MN12 looking trimmer and lighter weight when it came out in 89', it was actually several hundred pounds heavier then the old jellybean FOX tbirds and cougars...

They did bring one to America... though it was brought by GM and labeled "GTO." It's another reason for Ford not to bring anything across the water when everyone cries "WTF!?" about the goat. Personally I like it, and for good or bad, the GTO DID do a good job of stirring people up

Remember, ford did have plans to replace the mustang. The probe was going to be its replacement till thousands of enthusiasts *****ed at them. I still think the second gen Probe GT is an awesome car, but not as awesome as my Birdy ;p

Here's something I've been thinking about the mustang....WHAT MORE CAN THEY DO WITH IT?

Think about it. From 1965-1973, the Mustang evolved with the times....from a small sporty car to a mean muscle car to a large luxurious muscular sporty car....

Then from 1974-1978 it was a smaller, more economical car....just right for the times.

From 1979-1993 the car was possibly more advanced than it had ever been....and it got better in those 14 years...Then in 1994, an all - new car came along....in 1999, an updated version of the same car showed up.

My point is that from 1964-2004, the mustang was constantly changing and evolving.

Now in 2005, The Mustang is all-new and "retro" which is okay, it looks good, the interior, exterior are nice, and the running gear is great as well.

But I ask you this...

Where can they go from here?

Let's name off the recent retro cars, and what they have done to improve/change them during their life span...

New Thunderbird: No changes except colors/options = slated for cancellation.
New Beetle: No changes except colors & options = still around but nothing exciting.
PT Cruiser: No changes except colors & options = still around, nothing exciting (well they did add the vert & turbo, but it's still the same damn car)

See my point with those three examples? Where can the new bird, the new beetle or the PT go with their styling? Nowhere really. All they can do is more of what they have already done...little changes, nothing groundbreaking....eventually people will get bored & quit buying them, they'll stop producing them, and that is just fine.

So where can they go with the mustang from here? Continue the retro thing? If that was the case, we would have a 1971-1973 style "new" mustang, then we would have a 1974-1978 Mustang II style "new" mustang, then we would have some stangs that looked kinda like the FOX did, then the SN95 would return....sorta, then what? Back to the 05 style that looks like a 65 but a retro-retro car? As you can see that sounds rediculous, and will not happen...but would this not sound logical if the whole "retro" thing was to continue?

Now what about this? Imagine if there was a new 2005 mustang that was not retro, imagine if it was a continuation of the 2nd generation SN95? Definantly not a continuation of the FOX/SN95 car....because those where ready to be put out to pasture....but a completely new car called Mustang....just like now! but with a non-retro body...something new.....something 2005.....in 1965-1973, if you would have walked up to the owner of a Mustang, and said, "hey, what do you think the mustang will be like in 2005?" Would they say "a new version of the exact same car I have right now with strikingly similar body lines & interiors, only modern" No, I doubt it. They would have probably suggested something along the lines of those crazy concepts from back in those days.....I dunno, maybe I'm wrong...but I just don't see how a non-retro mustang can replace the 05+ car with any type of success. In my opinion, ford painted themselves into a corner with the retro mustang, I think it'll be the last one.

Talk about interesting! i was just getting my hair cut, I get in the car to leave and there's a late model taurus with a 100-Ford centennial badge on the back and it had those exact same wheels. I want a set:)

Anybody know what size they are? I just caught a passing glimpse of them but dang did they look sharp!
