in general, would swapping to thicker (heavier) axles slow our cars down any? i would think that adding weight to the rotating mass in our rear ends would decrease acceleration.

again, this is in general.

In theory, you are correct. However as slight as the weight difference is, I don't think it would be enough to notice.

Are SC half shafts worth grabbing from junk yard? Im not planning to go above 350 hp and that wont even be in a long while when I start to upgrade the upgrades. But realistically lets assumes the following which is my current goal, numbers aside. A PI conversion with Port/polished heads on a stock NPI bottom tuned with port/polished plenum larger TB and MAF(specs are undecided but assume the optimum sizes). Built trans/TC, one piece aluminum DS, 3.73's or 3.55's. And full exhaust with ported manifolds. And a rear shock tower/diff cover brace with more bracing in the front. Should I even bother with them?

Stock axles will probably hold up ok for street use, but if you take the car to the track and launch hard on some sticky tires, the axle might break. I'd say pick up a pair if and when you find them, and that way at least if you eventually do break an axle, you'll have a better one waiting to go in, instead of having to buy a new stock replacement.

I read somewhere in here that the LX half shafts can take nearly 400hp, im not sure about on slicks, but I dont plan on buying slicks either. Racing is fun but not a hobby in itself, I do plan on eventually putting 17X8s and some touring tires, never slicks.
This 91 SC is waiting to be stripped at this yard with white rims but I dont have the time to do it I just grabbed the spoiled which someone else pulled off but left at the scene. Id grab everything on it if it was worth my while to do so. The bastards that work there propped the car on steel rims trapping the GFX and rear valance between the car and the steel rims. MFers I swear they show the dead no respect but I plan getting back there in 40 days after school is over and grabbing the front sway bar. Half shafts are tough to yank though so Id have to know for sure if I want to do it. If the car is still there Ill post pics to see if someone wants something on a return visit, i plan on at least 2 or 3 on break. It seems like people only sometimes want SC stuff. Are 91-93 SC seats usable for my 94?

The half-shafts aren't hard to pull. Just take out the 3 bolts that hold the spindle on, cut the brake lines and ebrake cables, and pull the axle out with the spindle and brakes and everything still attached. Then once you get home and have a clean flat area to work on, you can take them apart the rest of the way.

As for how much the axles can take, it varies. I've seen a bone stock 3.8 break a V8 axle, and I've heard numerous stories of stock V6 axles holding up to various V8 swaps. Basically, when you put stress on the driveline, the weakest link is going to break. Usually on the street, that weakest link is the tires and they just start spinning, but if they don't, something else has to give, and it could be the axles, the diff, the U-joints, or even the trans itself. There's really no way to know what's going to break first, but the axles are a likely candidate.
