Im thinking about buying a 95' escort with 88,000 miles from work. What are some things I should look for that could be bad on it. I know it hasn't been driven more than a couple miles in the last 8 months or so and the battery is dead but supposedly it runs good, I need jump it and see if I can get it started. Does anyone know about what this car is worth? Thanks.

alright... ford escorts..

transmissions are soo bad many companys dont make replacement transmissions or rebuild parts for them, so if its shifting smoothly should be alright, if its kinda rough, my mom had her trans flushed (95 ford escort wagon) and took care of the problem.


only other thing i can think of is the timing belt, reccommended replacement interval is 65,000-70,000 miles, they can go longer since my moms hasnt been replaced yet and shes at 84,000 miles, but when it brakes, the car wont start being as they are non-interference engines. but at the same time when you replace the belt if needed, replace the waterpump, its in the same area and if you dont, the pump could start to leak and ruin a timing belt, we perform that job at work for about 400 parts and labor waterpump and timing belt on these escorts.

thats about all i know.

What's wrong with escorts? I've never heard anything but good things about them from the people I've known who've had them. I'll agree that the ATX is pretty weak, but the MTX Escorts are nothing but reliable from what I've seen. I just bought an MTX '98 ZX2, and it's running flawlessly so far.

I've got a 93 that has gone through a fortune in parts and maintenance:

K&N filter gets cleaned twice a year
Change spark plugs once a year
Flush cooling system every two years
Replaced tires four times
Two timing belts (144,800 miles and counting)
One set of brake pads
One replacement battery
Replaced the clutch at 143,000

On the serious side, since my Escort is still the least expensive vehicle per mile we have, the power seatbelts are a flop (I don't think the 95 is cursed with those) and if it's a two door, the doors will sag after a while.

I love my Escort. It's a great vehicle that has and continues to serve my family well. Just sucks that I won't be able to replace it with another Escort (if and when it ever breaks).

I've known a few older guys who had their daughters driving escorts and I did them both some favor work by fixing the coil springs on both of them. One just suddenly collapsed when it broke in half, and then I discovered all 4 were broken, the other 3 had a broken coil down at the bottom so it still rode fine. And the other had broken front springs. I've also sold a few sets of springs to some customers at work too, so I'd guess it's a common replacement item.

We bought a 95 Escort wagon new and donated it last year after almost 190K miles.

Pretty much had the same problems everyone mentioned, which I think is more wear and tear. Had to replace tie rod ends often, and I blame that on the potholes here in the northeast.

It was a great car and I had no problems with 30 MPG, kinda wish I had it now! :(

Yeah I just re-filled the ZX2, and got 25 mpg driving like a maniac around town, so I'm happy with it as a daily driver. In fact, I think it might be faster than my Thunderbird was when it was stock, so no complaints here. I'll be replacing the springs with Eibach ones before too long, so that doesn't worry me too much.

I had a 97 escort the only thing I did to it before It got totaled was front brake's and rear coil spring's80,000 miles. My dad has a zx2 2002 I think It's garbage 4 transmission's exhaust rusted out (wear and tear) before the cats and the car vibrate's like crazy at idle. I think it's the exhaust hanger's when they replaced the exhaust at Midas.
