So, I'm thinking of upgrading my exhaust. What is the best cat back exhaust system that will give me the best results for my money. I'm thinking of the Dynomax system. Possibly to compliment the intake plenum and throttle body that I'm planning on getting.

only thunderbird i ever saw with a dynomax catback on it, i couldnt evan tell it had any exhaust done to it at all. i would say cut your exhaust off befour the 3rd cat (as no shop will) and then take it to an exhaust shop and have them fab up a set of true duals and mount a set of mufflers of your choice. i had them do this for me on my first bird and i belive a paid $150 not includeing mufflers.

Best idea was the cutting off the third cat. BUT instead of putting two mufflers at the rear, use a dual in dual out magnaflow where the third cat used to be. then run True duals on out the rear.

Does this sound good? I want some rumble that's comparable to a stock '96-98 Mustang Cobra. Maybe not quite as loud but noticeable. I've heard a '95 Tbird LX with the flowmaster cat back system and it actually sounded good. I have been thinking of going to true duals, but that will be when I buy the car from my dad who technically owns it. This will probably be in 3-4 years. I have, however, drawn out a true dual exhaust system that will route just fine under the car. I'm thinking of having 4 high flow cats, an x pipe, and a pair of mufflers at the back. The tubing will be 2.25 from engine to mufflers. Also thinking of upgrading my exhaust manifolds to mid length headers so can make good torque to deal with the automatic. I was just considering putting a cat-back system on sometime in the near future to free up some power. Does this sound like a good plan or what?

Sounds good. I want to go just a tad bit quieter, but it still sounds good. I want something that isn't quite as loud when cruising.

maybe the SLP's had something to do with it being that loud. Still sounds good though.

If you leave on the first two cats (the ones nearest the manifolds) it dampens the sound pretty well. in fact, I'm considering putting the first two cats back on my car, or leaving the system the way it is, and putting two glasspacks at the very end, before the tips. That should quiet it down some.

But it does give it a very good sound.. I've gotten quite a few compliments on it.

there is no need for 4 cats. and a cat back really isnt going to give you any power an exhaust is only as good as its weakest link, whitch would be the stock cats so untill those are upgraded you really wont be seing any gaines. just tryn to save you some money

i met someone who i almost bought exhaust from. he cut off the third cat, went to a shop and spent 200 for everything. i never heard it. he totaled the car (reason for selling the exhaust). he said it sounded louder than mustang GT's with crazy loud exhaust

i totally agree. a single di/do magnaflow or flowmaster would be an excellent choice. i actually just got my exhaust done today, and i went w/ eliminating the third cat, and put a single di/do flowmaster in its place and ran true duals all the back. i personally think it sounds perfect. upon startup, its not very loud. it has a nice deep, soft rumble and its the same at cruising speeds. then when you stand on it it opens up and sounds awesome!

I second this setup. I ran true dual 2.5" on my 96 that I had for a short time and I really liked the sound. It consisted of high flow cats, Magnaflow DI/DO resonator, and then just pipe to the back of the car. The shop did a very good job fabbing it up and tucking it under the car and it sounded good. Noticeable at idle and cruising in town but still reasonable on the highway.

My 94 has true dual 2.5" pipe, high flow cats, X pipe in the middle, and Flowmaster 40's in the rear. Also a good sound, but also louder than the Magnaflow setup. I do have a video of that. It's not that great, but you get the idea.

I agree, Ive had no problems with mine. I have the third cat gone and my front two cats were replaced with magnaflow high flows. Eliminating the 3rd cat and changing the exsiting front two changed the sound to a deeper tone. Its not loud (which i didnt want) but it is far better than stock, i think it sounds good.
