Thunderbird to Mustang Pedal
Conversion How-To





Aftermarket Thunderbird pedal covers were never available for the
1989-1997 cars. We will show you how to modify your stock pedals so the
Mustang Bullitt Aluminum / Urethane pedal covers fit. These brushed aluminum
covers came on the Mustang Bullitt and are available through the Ford Racing
Catalog. Part numbers are as follows. Click on picture to view larger picture
of pedal cover.

Installation:

Before you can install the Mustang accelerator pedal you will need
a donor pedal from any 1994-current Mustang. The part you need off of it
is the Headed Drive Pin which secures the pedal cover to the accelerator
pedal arm. The Mustang pin is longer than the T-Bird.






Removal of the pedal is necessary from the car. Two 13mm nuts and
disconnect the cable linkage.


Note: Have another person hold the throttle body linkage open to
provide slack for easier removal.






Small modification to the pedal cover is needed for it to move freely
on the Thunderbird accelerator arm.


Cut the pedal in the area marked otherwide the pedal will not sit
correctly in the Thunderbird accelerator arm.




Trim the pedal back as shown. Match the angle as shown by the arrow.
This will allow proper clearance.




When installing the drive pin try not to compress the area shown
by the arrow.


Note: A small flat blade screw driver inserted works to hold the
plastics shape during the installation.


If you install the pin too far just tap it backwards.

A small socket over the pin head works well to hold the pedal while
the pin is tapped back.

Brake and Clutch Pedal Installation



Due to the modifications involved with the 5-speed brake and clutch
installation


it is recommended they be removed from the car first.

Note: Modifications to the brake and clutch pedals are the same
for installation of the pedal covers.






The Clutch and Brake both have 13mm bolts supporting the bracket
to the frame.


Note: Dash is removed for pictures but is not needed to do this
conversion.




Stock brake pedal. Removing from bracket makes it easier to work
on.




The Mustang pedal cover has more curve to it than the Thunderbird
pedal.


Mount the Thunderbird pedal in a vice and using a hammer reshape
the pedal so it has a curve


that matches the Mustang pedal. Not alot of hammering is needed
to bend the metal.




Since the Mustang pedal has a different shape a template has been
made which is used for cutting the pedal.

Download and print the template. Cut the template out. Tape the template
to the pedal as shown.


Using a marker as shown mark the area to be cut.



Mount the pedal in a vice. Grind the area away that has been marked.



Since the edges are thicker after cutting you will need to thin the
edges before the pedal cover will fit.


Remove metal from the back side and smooth any ruff areas.

Note: Recheck the curve of the pedal matches the pedal cover once
again.




Note: To reduce rust on the bare metal it is recommend that you spray
the surface with paint before installing the pedal covers.










Automatic Brake Pedal Installation



1989-1997 Installation of the brake pedal covers are the same when
using the F150 brake pedal cover.


Note: The Mustang auto brake cover is not large enough to fit the
Thunderbird brake pedal on the automatics.


Download and print the template. Cut the template out. Tape the
template to the pedal as shown.


Using a marker as shown mark the area to be cut.

Foot Rest Pedal Installation



Remove the foot rest from the car.

Remove the plastic cover from the assembly.





No template is necessary to locate where the upper hole will be drilled
for the Mustang foot rest.


Easy way to locate the mark for the upper hole to be drilled is
to align the lower square hole with new cover.


Mark the center of the upper locating pin.

Note: Optionally you can trim the metal on the lower part of the
foot rest.




A dremmel will help you shape the square hole.

Note: If the upper hole is made too big you can insert a metal threaded
screw in the upper clip to expand


the plastic and secure it in the metal bracket.







Spray black paint over the areas you cut to prevent rust.
