Ok, I've done some serious hunting and I havent quite found the answer I need yet... I'm sure it's there and I'm too dopey to find it. lol!!
So, I"m hoping for experience,
I've got a stock 96 lx sport, the stock (what I believe are 7 inch wide) rims, and 225-60-16's on em.
This is where I break tradition, it seems, and I want a taller tire for the rears alone.
Blasphemy!!!! lol!!
I dont think I can shoehorn a 275-60 on a stock 7" wide rim. My guess is it'll run too far inboard and I'd need a rim with more offset.
But I'm staying with the rims I have, because my wallet says so....

My question is, keeping the 225's up front, how wide a 60 series tire can I get on the rear stock rims?? without it rubbing??!? I'd appreciate ALL input on this, guys....
Thanks!!!!

Yeah... Thats what I thought... 55's hard to find, huh?? Hmmm..... Love to get a 265 in there, but I figure I might be pushin my luck with the independent suspension, and no WAY I can afford rims right now...
Got a buddy with 15" ProStars, skinnys up front, 275-60-15 rears on his Mustang, and it's a killer look, IMO. tryin to ape the look a bit without it being too wacky looking on a stock rim 'bird.
I dunno... Guess the fat rear tire look takes me back to the old days.....lol!!!
Thanks!!

lol no problem.. i used to get tires when i lived in tennessee they were cheap.. easy but good tires.. i always got them staggered in width.. like you want them i had 205 up front and 240's in the rear.. the tires are summit radial trac GT's.. great sticky street tire and youd just think it was another tire just by looking at it.. and they had a great raised white lettering on them. they looked pretty sweet on my swapped SC and my 96 lx.. i have some pics somewhere if you want them..

Well, I had a nice long reply all typed up...then the power went out.

I run a staggered setup on both of my MN12's. On the 90 XR7, I run 245/45-17's up front on 17x8" wheels with 275/50-17's on the rear on 17x9" wheels. On the 94 LX, I run 245/60-15's up front with 255/60-15's on the rear with 15x7" wheels all around. A taller and wider rear tire really aids these cars in acheiving the right stance, IMHO.

The widest tire that I would recommend for street use on a 7" wide wheel would be a 255 (10" wide). A 255/55-16 would be 27" tall, and a 255/60-16 would be 28" tall. That being said, I don't know if either of those sizes are commonly available.

NO Doubt!! I'd LOVE to see the lx pics, I'd really like to get an idea what the 240s look like... Those were all 60 series, correct?? I've got the 225's on the front and like the look and wanna raise the stance in the a$$ a little bit, I'd also be real happy with a little more 'hookup' in the rear, obviously... Thanks!!

Awesome! You got pics of the LX? Love to see it!!.....
I'm running with the stock rims, a 16x7 with no offset doesnt leave me much in the option dept, I know, so the 255 was as far as I actually thought I could go.... Naturally, I'm looking to shoehorn in the most treadwidth I can get in the rear without wheelwell rub. I"m firm on a 60 series to keep that sidewall height, and keep it consistent with the 225-60's in the front. Thanks for all the info, Bro!!

PS, love the look of those M/T slicks on the Cougar.....lol!!! Great car, Bro.....

PPS, again, I say, the 93 Cougar is goin on a hook real soon, I've no desire to sell a car with a s#!t Tranny, and no time to play with another toy, my band and this Tbird are more than enuff to keep me busy!!! lol
Sooo, if anybody needs anything, speak up.... I'm happy to part it out to anyone stuck for parts. You pay the shipping, natch......
All you guys have been real great with the info and I love this site, so anything I can do for the 'brotherhood'.... lol!!

Yeah, I'm stupid... Clicked on your tag, hit the page after I posted... ur Cougars great, Bro. Told ya I like those slicks!! lol!!
EDIT: Yeah, just took another look and realized what I was looking at thru my beer haze last night. That Cougar's quite riduculous!!!! Killer job.... And I STILL love the height of those slicks filling the wheelwell.... lol!!
The 94 is what I thought Id get, looks wise, the diff being I'm on a 16 inch rim. Any offset on those rims??
I like a car that sits up in the rear, man... Always did. Guess it's the whole 'Pro Street' look I've always loved, the old school Pro Stock cars from the 60's started that and it's what I grew up on as a kid readin Pops Hot Rod magazines... lolfof
Gotta have big tread in the rear.....
I want the car to actually hook up too, Jeez, the friggin 225's on there are just a smoke machine at this point, but I CANT go rims right now...
NOW all I gotta do is hunt for an inexpensive 255-60-16.... Bwahahahahaha!!!!!

I don't have the specs on those wheels (they came on one of the MN12's that I parted out), but the offset should be very close to a stock 16x7" wheel.

Ahhhh.... More saladshooters....lolfof!!
Yeah, I've got the sport 16's... I'm happy to have the height from the xtra 1/2" on either side( from centerline, so to speak) to fill that wheelwell, but I may have a time finding the 255-60 I want for this thing.... Got an old set of 275-60-15's on Nova rims I may have to weld closed and re-drill...RAOF...

Not for nuthin but ur running 255-60 0n a 15" rim? that sounds to me like I get a bigger aspect ratio (obviously slightly) on a 16" rim, and although ur tbird has the stance I'm lookin for, I'd like a little more "tire" in the well... I'm just hoping I'm not gonna have problems getting the 255 'inside' on the stock rim in that well.... BTW!!! Is is just me, or do the 96/97's seem to 'stand' a little higher??!? I'm not complaining, I'm stoked over the headroom I have to fit a taller tire....
