Governor Taft wants to lower taxes on Businesses and greatly lower income taxes for Ohio's wealthiest citizens by almost doubling the taxers on tabacco. This would bring the price of cartons up nearly 5 dollars per carton. Call you legislators @ 1-888-254-2712. Tell them you strongly oppose any tax increase on tabacco. If you vote be sure they know that. If you dont vote start and know who your voting for.

double taxes on tobacco

from the Ohio council for reasonable business policy.

Quick statistic for ya. 10 out of 10 people die.

Also.. How do you think it feels to be a smoker in Califonia? I pay 4 something a pack for Camel Turkish Royals and over 5 a pack for Lucky Strikes.

I really don't like giving the rich tax breaks. Those who make the most should pay the most....PERIOD.

I also like the idea of taxing the bejeezes out of a product that is 100% KNOWN TO BE HARMFUL to your health. The state's gotta pay for the healthcare of the low income ppl who screw up their bodies with cigarettes so why not make it cost more? I honestly can find no reason to not have a 500% tax on cigarettes or more. And treat them like liquor. Most states will not allow resale of another state's liquor in their state (except from WHOLESALE distributors). So do the same to cigs.

My choice to smoke. As a voter living in the United States I have my right along with any other smoker to do what I can to protect my rights. Also I feel for you out on the west coast, but this is Ohio and its my battle ground so we we will do what we can here. I am just tired of smokers rights being craped on. Check out the link and see how much money smokers generate for the stores they buy their smokes in. lol Dirty did you click that link? It gives info on how much money you could make going to our sister states and buying smokes then selling them in Ohio. Something that I am not condoning but is just a interesting fact. I didnt post this here for debate about what you as a non smoker think about smokers. Its the wrong forum for that. AS the NRA would say.. I am a smoker and I vote.

I recently quit smoking, mostly...

However Oklahoma has some pretty outragous taxes on Tabacco. I smoke Clove Sampoerna Milds, used to pay $4.50 a pack, now they are over $6.00. Since they are imported smokes, I ordered them in $100 amounts directly from Indonesia for $1.70 a pack. shiping was around $10but for 6 cartons, for $110-$120 total, you really could not go wrong for premium smokes.

I quit smoking for one major reason: Imagine all the cool car parts you can buy with your smoke money! I really did not care about the the health stuff becouse I am still young and Imortal, right?

As for local taxes on stuff like tabacco and other products, you can avoid them by purchasing on the internet, this will hurt local business, but help buisnesses in areas that do not have obsene taxes...like indonesia.

I chew the Skoal and there are no spitting bans yet.....but ill keep it in the old dixie cup and not be shut out.....

Taft should just get the boot out of Ohios office no matter what. I would say I agree to charge more money on tabacco products because the poor cannot help themselves, but someone needs to pay thier health care cost sometime for that lung transplant....

I dont mind smokers.....but I hate the way the smokers post will be right next to the door, but yet all you see on the ground are the butts........I hate the mind set smokers get.

If Taft wants to increase state money and budgets......Casinos and slot machiens are the answer.

Absolutely! It is completely your choice and since I don't live in Ohio, I have absolutle no right/reason to say whether that tax is right or wrong. I was just giving my opinion and I have no desire to debate about it. ;) I actually think it is pretty cool that you are standing up for what you think is right (even though I don't agree with it) because there are too many people in this country who piss and moan about things but never take the time to do anything about it. Good luck with that!

ok my .02 cents. A pack of cigs here is 4.75 for Camel Turkish Jade. As it is know I go to Ohio to get cigs almost $15.00 cheaper by the carton. I hope they dont raise the taxes there. They raised them here twice in the past few years. I tried to quit smoking during the winter but it didn't last too many fight's and arguments.

Well, i see there are people out here that would like to see a 500% increase in something that don't effect them. Thanks for standing up for your neighbors rights! So when they want to take your guns, or ban the gas guzzling pick ups then maybe I could say, it don't effect me...go for it. But the thing is, it does effect me in one way or the other. If we don't care about each others rights, then were a lost group of sheep. Losing our rights piece by piece. So even if you hurt some of us because you don't approve (by judging them) of something they do, don't let them lose there rights or yours may be next.
While i'm on it, remember...only one has the real right to judge

Jay,

You are one of the few TCCoAer's that I have ever met personally so you get slack that most people don't get.

HOWEVER, I think it's way off base to think that the government is giving the tax breaks to "the rich" so that they can raise the taxes on tobacco products.

First, what constitutes "rich" in your mind? I think a lot of people develop a mob mentality of class warfare when the government does something they don't like. This definitely looks like one of those cases.

Second, I really don't get the whole "smoker's rights" concept. Do you accept my right not to be exposed to cigarette smoke? If you do, then how do you think the balance of our collective rights could be achieved. If you don't, then why would think that ANYONE would care about your so-called "smoker's rights"?

The bottom line is this; "smoker's rights" are costing taxpayers millions of dollars because this poison is causing a lot of health problems that cause not only the government to spend more on low income healthcare but also cause insurance premiums to go up for everyone that pays for health insurance.

Smoking is not only a health hazard, it's now becoming unpopular. You are about to become a significant minority. I hope you can endure the predjudice that this new status brings you.

One last thing, there is a commercial on TV where a young girl says "a smoking section in a non-smoking restaurant is like a peeing second in a pool." Seems to make a lot of sense to me. Good luck getting people to stand up for this so obviously bad addiction.
