ok guys i think my tc is about to go on my bird when i downshift from od to d it surges 3 or 4 times befor it shifts. and also when i let my foot off the gas for a few seconds it will surg down hard then run fine. now i have the tc out of my 84 cougar and im wondering if it will work (the cougar is another "in progress" job)
and if there is a high stall tc or a better tc for smoother shifts i would like to know
and while im down there i should go ahead and swap the flywheel.
so any recomendations?????

doesnt sound like a torque converter problem, sounds more like maybe dirty or low fluid. Have you checked the fluid level since it started doing this? Try that first, if not.

But if you do decide to swap TC's, I think the 84's had a c-6 tranny, not absolutely sure though, and I dont think it would work. Not real knowledgable on the older fords though. But dirtyd0g makes excellent high stall torque converters at an unbeatable price. A few members here have his products. I'd personally contact him for any tranny need.

And your flexplate should be fine.

yeah I'd try changing the fluid and filter and see if that does anything, could also be that the TV cable is out of adjustment, come to think of it. What do you mean by "surge down" specifically.

First step is change the fluid and filter and see if this solves the problem. Bad fluid or a clogged filter will cause problems with shifting.

Yep, And those had a centrifugal lockup clutch in them. Otherwise known as a major problem. That could be causing the problem. There isn't a worse designed converter on the planet. Here are the specs on them. 13 inch diameter (freakin huge). 1300-1500 stall (gee wonder why it doesn't like to get up and go) centrifugal lockup clutch (grenade) and enough weight to keep the motor running for 5 minutes after you turn it off. :p they weigh about 55lbs. If it were mine I would put a c4 converter in it. The c4 converter is plug and play and has none of those problems. Just have to get the right one for your flexplate. I believe dacco part number f-48

The 89 has an aod transmission. Gear wise it's all about what you want. 3.55's seem to give the best gas mileage. 2200 stall non lockup converters give a very streetable efficient gain on these cars. I have installed that setup in many cars and everyone acts like I handed them a race car when they get it back. To me it's a very mild setup, to most people who have not tried different configurations it is awesome. Stay mild with stall on these aod's unless they are heavily built. The stock aod doesn't handle converter change well.

So a 3000 stall TCI and a Bauman VB would be a bad idea?

Got that setup from Fathead_97_LE tonight.....did I mention he kicks ***. :)

Lockup or non lockup? Sounds like a decent racing combo ,but a hot street setup better get a huge cooler.

Ill be running dual coolers probably. Let me dig through my PMs and figure out if its lockup or non. So whats so bad about TCI? I would imagine that I have less chance of breaking it with a very mild 3.8 setup.

Im hyjacking your post again. LOL. :)

So dual coolers will be a necessity I take it. :) Maybe even a temp gauge is in the near future..............

What kind of temps we talking?

You think the 28000 will be adequate? Ill get a temp gauge down the road.....I probably wont have it in for a while yet anyway.

I've got a 2100-2200 (don't remember for sure) RPM stall on my non-locking TC and while I'm only running one cooler, I'm planning to put a fan on it in the spring to help - just something else to consider :D
