I saw those and was wondering about them, too. Of course, I tend to be loyal to the people I hang with and this board is no exception. So I'm saving up for one of Alan's converters. You know the old sayings, you get what you pay for, and by low-balling we might as well forget about support.

Alan, you ever get ahold of one of those converters to dissect? I hope so, this should be good...lol

I also saw them and was considering getting one but I think I will get a dirtydog converter. If I have to pull the tranny twice due to a crap converter I would snap. Do it right or do it twice is my motto. I just have to figure out my goals and desires and talk to Alan before I splurge in the next few months.

DirtyD0g's converters are far better than anything you're going to find on Ebay.
The real problem with replacing just the converter comes in when you have an old transmission that is full of crap that will contaminate your new converter; once the system is contaminated, you can't get all the fragments out.

I'd find a newer transmission in a JY, jmod it, and replace the tranny and converter at the same time; then you only have the lines and cooler to flush all the crap out of.

If you ask nicely Alan might sell you a good cooler, and 3/8" lines... :)

I bought my latest 02 Gran Marquis transmission for $450; it had ~40k miles on it, but is still way better than my old one. My first two had 12k and 22k miles... :) Those are getting rare. But the 02 is a better core for a rebuild, and has most of the parts that get added in Jerry's thesis.

whats your opinion?
Do you think a man that builds race transmissions is going to recommend a $300 "new" Ebay transmission? Or comment on a (probably lame) competitor?

Grog that is exactly the route I am taking with mine. My stock 95 Tranny with well over 200k on it is finally starting to wear out.

Converter, newer tranny, big cooler, forced lube kit, jmod, and a heavy foot is what I have planned soon. Maybe I can get the 4.10 gears and trac loc as well. Have to see how the money holds out.

I actually bought one of these and have had no problems as of yet. I plan on getting one of Alans converters in the future but was short on cash at the time and this worked in a pinch. But keep in mind my car is all stock but the trans, who knows if it would hold up to more.

Probably made with the stock gm 245mm front cover, an actual picture would be required to have any guess at what they are.

Well, everything costs money, there is no way around that. To make a cheap converter, money has to be saved. Such as lock-up clutch material, the core you start with, torrington bearings, all the other little things you do in there - I have no idea! You're the expert, Alan! Plus, support always costs time & money...

I'm just saying :zdunno:

I bought mine off Ebay, Boss Hog made by Alabama Convertors. Haven't heard anything bad about em.

I can say that after 3 failed attempts they will refund the money. That is the only experience I have ever seen with them. A guy brought me the converter hoping I could fix it and I refused. Again another stock gm fwd front cover with pads welded on it, using the stock gm fwd clutch assembly.

Generalized information that has nothing to do with the most important parts. The lockup system on these converters is usually the most overlooked component. Using the 9.5 gm clutch means the clutch is actually weaker than the OEM clutch that ford produced. The way I see it a performance converter should be exactly that. Every part of it should be better than stock.

And that is why Alan rocks, his answer aren't "well mine is just better" it's always a detailed opinion. Expect my mark VIII TC to be on it's way to you in a few weeks for that better than stock rebuild with increased stall Alan, I'm tying up all of the last odds an ends for that project I told you about.
