as you may know the tranny(m5r2) is shot in my 89 cougar xr7 5spd sc. Now people say that the t5 is junk and will not handle the torque of the sc. One has suggested a c4. Is the swith from manual to auto worth it? What is a stall converter worth? Shift kit?

Personally I would stick with the 5-speed.

A BUILT auto will be faster than any human can shift. It can also be alot more driveable (stop and go traffic). But in the end, the 5-speed is just more fun.

If you want to goto auto, use an AOD. It is a fairly easy swap, you would need he trans, flexplate, driveshaft from an auto (any 89-93 auto SC or 91-93 V8), and the computer from an auto.

imho i would keep your xr7 a 5 speed due to the rarity of 5 speed xr7's but if you must go auto, go 89-93 sc, dont bother with the 91-93 v8 aod as the sc trans is built up more than the v6 or v8 lx trans.
