Hey guys im thinking about doing a trans flush but had a couple questions. First is it safe?i've got a 97 4.6 it has 159,000 and im not sure if it has ever had a fluid change or not. Its been kind of shifting funny the past couple weeks so i figured ill take it down to the shop. And I've gotten a couple people telling me that i should replace on of the quarts with trannsx. Anybody got any opions? Would like to here them.:)

There isn't much of a general consensus on if you should or shouldn't flush a high mileage trans with an unknown service history. Some say the old fluid is the only thing holding it together. It's a tough decision to make, but either way, when the trans dies (they eventually all do) you're going to think that it is caused by what you did or what you didn't do to it.

never know. I have mine done at the dealer. First time I had it done they broke the radiator when they were taking off the cooling line. They paid for a new radiator and install without me having to say a word.

Maybe take it to a dealer and have them advise you on whether or not it should be done based on your concerns? If something goes wrong later maybe you can get them to do something since they advised you whether or not to do it.

Seems like with the flushes these days no one changes the filter anymore. Might want to consider that also.

I don't know about that question as you are essentially asking the dealership: "do you want to take my money or not?"

While some might be more honest and advise you against doing such a procedure on such an old transmission, most service writers will be incentivized to take your money. After all, if someone screws up (like with DanB above), the SW won't be to blame for that procedure as they have a more convenient person to blame (the actual mechanic).

The advice I've been given by an independent mechanic (essentially the owner/service writer/tech all rolled into one person) is that a flush which pressurizes the AT and pushes all the fluid through it will take up any bits of metal that might have come off your transmission and rake said metallic particles across all the gears.

A drain and fill w/ transmission filter replacement is a much less profitable (for the shop) but IMO safer procedure to do with ANY transmission.

Flush Only is a TOTAL Rip Off

Does'nt take a Rocket Scientist to figure out Flush Only is a TOTAL Rip Off - You are left with Dirty Filter, Dirty Pan & a Magnet covered in mushy black slush.

If that tranny has never been flushed before.. start saving up now.

Sure it's only anecdotal and that's like stereotyping. But what do we know about stereotypes?!!!

Even a filter change done wrong can kick that tranny over the cliff. I find something clean to block the passage and hose the filter receiver down with WD 40.

As I understand it, the shops have a machine with a straw that is stuck down the dipstick tube. It reaches the bottom of the pan, to get all of the fluid out by suction. They do not replace the filter, because they don't even have to remove the pan. This ensures there is no possibility for gasket leaks once you drive away. I don't think they drain the torque converter either.

I'd rather just do it myself, draining the TC and changing the filter. I also like to add a drain plug for the next time.

Some say the old fluid is the only thing holding it together.
I like to keep the old fluid for a couple weeks after the change, just in case the grit in the fluid is what kept the transmission from slipping. I dispose of the old stuff once I'm satisfied.

Moral of the story: change the transmission fluid at recommended intervals, like you would your engine oil. Don't wait for the 200,000 mark to drain the factory fluid.

I'd say just drain the old fluid out, replace the filter, and add fresh Mercon V. I did a tranny flush at 80,000 miles with no issues at all.

I say do not touch that transmission, it's days are numbered. If you wait until it is too late to do preventative maintenance you didn't prevent anything and will make more problems than you fix.

That is the most sketchy way of doing a transmission service that I've ever seen or heard of, one of my buddies works for Sears and they do that crap. They call it "power flushing" it's nothing more than a ghetto and lazy drain and fill. Most shops, mine included, use a machine that hooks up to the transmission cooler lines and flushes new fluid in while pumping old fluid out. I've seen dealerships use these machines as well.

Honestly though the good old fashion pan drop and TC drain are more then effective on our cars as long as the preventative maintenance schedule is properly followed. If possible install a drain plug while the pan is down, even if you have to use a universal kit like the B&M plug kit, it saves times and a lot of the mess.

Honestly though if your transmission is having issues and the fluid looks like it has been mixed with used oil no fluid change or flush is going to save it, it's time for a rebuild.

Don't touch the fluid. I was in a similar situation with a Taurus. Changing the fluid did nothing. I can't really tell if it made my slight shifting problem worse but it certainly didn't make it any better. Save your money for when the tranny dies, but don't spend all day worrying about when that will happen ;-)

BTW any shop that does not use the original pan gasket over is morons. Nothing is better than the factory gasket. They do not leak.

im in the same boat, tho so far my cars tranny doesnt seem to be acting up. ive just rolled 181k on it, original tranny. i wanted to change the fluid filter and jmod and everything when i got it, but i was highly advised by a senior master tech to not do that. so ill be waiting for when my tranny goes/i add more power, to just replace it/rebuild it, then do the preventative maintenance at regular intervals. cuz i have no idea of the history of my car.

There's 'shifting funny' and there's 'slipping'.

If it's just shifting with a delay then feels firmly engaged; then from what I know third hand, trans x is worth a try.

If the shift goes immediately but feels like it is slipping the first second or two.. or slips when hot.. then Lucas is the ticket.
Both swell seals and clutch material.
Difference is Lucas also increases viscosity while Trans X supposedly cleans out passages and varnish.

Up to you but depending on issue above it cant hurt as you are looking at a rebuild if you do nothing.

I have first hand exp with Lucas. Bought 2nd bird cheap at 143,000 miles because it slipped when hot. And TC lockup shuddered.
Drove it 150,000 more miles after I added Lucas and a trans cooler. Never opened the trans, added maybe 2 quarts in all that time and never leaked trans fluid on driveway either. And it quit slipping and shuddering.

I only believe in additives as last resort .. dont do seafoam.. dont do Marvel .. sures hell dont believe in STP anything.. So I think I'm fairly credible.

Dont do it, I did it to mine and the new fluid let everything loose on the inside and poof...new tranny on the way

My advice is to simply drain all the fliud including the TC. Clean the pan and install a new filter, refill and be on your way.

My AOD was doing some shuddering at about 35 mph but it was still shifting well. It had a pretty bad leak from the dipstick tube. It took it to a trusted tranny shop. They fixed the leak and did a normal complete fluid change and I haven't had a problem since. They charged $115. Money well spent and I didn't have to deal with the mess.
