I really need an add on trans cooler. What style is better dual pass heatsink or plate? This will be an add on and I like the idea of the heatsink style because it looks easy to mount.

You want the stacked plate version, not the tube and fin "heat sink" version. There is MUCH greater fluid-to-metal-to-air surface area, providing enhanced cooling capacity.

It seems most run a plate style cooler. Must be a good reason for it. I know when I go to install or have a cooler installed, I'll be going with a plate style.
