Okay.. I've read and read about the J-Mod, and I hear the benefits are extraordinary. I have the AOD that came with the 3.8SCs, plus a nice aftermarket torque convertor that I don't really know much about. It's a solid transmission, but I need a firmer shift. Is it at all possible to bolt a 4R70W up to my motor? Shift kits have crossed my mind, but I think I would have to see/drive one before I bought one. I've also heard that I can buy an upgraded valve body.

Basically, I want something bulletproof and that "shifts with authority" for my motor.

Pros/cons, opinions and reasoning please :)

You could, it has been done... but i dont think its worth the hassle for you. The best bet for an AOD car is a Trans-go kit at this point. Maybe others have more experience with other kits.. if they want to chime in.

I'll agree with you. The SC/IC V-6 really doesn't need the wide ratio gear set anyhow. Swapping in a 4R70W is more work than it's worth on a '90 XR-7.

I've just got the el-cheapo B&M Shift Improver in my AOD and it's gone 2 years/30k miles without a hiccup (without a fluid change either... gotta get rolling on that...) It's not what you'd call "bullet proof" however. If you are willing to spend some money on a real "bullet proof" transmission, there are any number of builders who can build/sell you a tough-as-nails AOD. I think it's safe to say that they can be built nearly (if not equally) as strong as the 4R70W. Do a quick search of the Drive Train forum and you'll probably find plenty. There's Art Carr, TCI, a bunch of places that build 'em for race applications. (I'm not promoting either of those sources, just using them for example.)
