I have a 2000 lincoln town car and trannys is going out
I was wondering if the trans from a 1998 mark 8 would work or what other trans is a direct replacement witout repin

The Mark VIII trans will be too short, Town cars used the long tail shaft/housing like the Police interceptor Crown Victoria’s. The 98 trans would be a minor downgrade internally from the 2000 anyway.

my recommendation would be finding a lowish mile trans from another Town Car or P71 Vic from your year onward. Your Town car uses the OSS drive for the Speedometer I believe, so you can use any 4R70W or 4R75w up to the final 2012 models.

If you have no problems piecing the two together, you could move the valve body (after a thorough inspection and cleaning) and the tailshaft and tailshaft housing over from the stock trans and it should be fine. Keep all the electronics from the 2000.
