how do you know exactly what year transmission you have

Look at the tag on the passenger side.
The first 4 characters tell you the year, and what kind of car it came out of.

The case part# will give you a good idea. It shoudl start with an F and the next number is the year of case design.

The case should have a Year stamped on the very top - right before where the Bellhousing starts to rise.

one has big 33 at the torque converter part
a little 96 in the middle and a 44 w at the end
the other has a big 36 a little 95 and a 45 w at the driveshaft
so i have a 96 and a 95

It was made in 96, clearly printed on the Tag .. F6 part number .. and the case you mentioned says 96 stamped into middle on the top.

That's a great list, but...
Some of those transmissions won't work at all with our cars; Some do not have the gear on the tailshaft for our speedo, and it won't work without it.
"2004 Mustang GT 4.6L 3R3P-BA" Does not have the gear, for sure. 03 are a maybe, but I've never seen an 04+ with the gear.
Looking in the hole with a bright led flashlight is a good idea for jy transmissions, as far as the tailshaft goes. Crap on the sensor is a "do-not-buy" sign for sure.
All my cars have 02 transmissions now.
If we can get someone who knows for sure to supply all the pertinent corrections to the table, this would make a great sticky!

Thanks for the compliment, and I never said ANY of these would work with any vehicle without some modifications. I just wanted to post a list for identification. It's also not complete, there is no Lincoln trannys for example. Also, I believe Crown Vics have a longer tailshaft, don't they? I may update it later with more 4R70W tranny numbers as I come across them. Who knows, I may even list the differences (wow, that could take awhile!)

Digging up an old, but good thread:
What are the differences in the HPP package crown vics?
Do they have the long tailshaft?
I'm looking at this:
http://idmsvcs.com/2vmod/tranny/modelnumbers/crownvic/index.html
Specifically this:
2002 PKE-BG...............1W7P-7000-AA...............Civilian...............
................PKE-AR...............1W7P-7000-BA...............Civilian...............
................PKE-BH...............1W7P-7000-CA...............Police............... LONG TAIL
................PKE-BJ...............1W7P-7000-DA...............HPP............... ??????
BTW, this is a link to a mirror of P71interceptor.com; RIP.

Yes, I broke another one, lol.
This one's pump apparently died yesterday as I hit the interstate.
