Hello. I have a 1997 Thunderbird 3.8. In my mission to put out all the dummy lights, I've made my way to the ABS/traction control. Using an OBDII/ABS/SRS diagnostic tool, I can establish communication with the ecm, but I cannot establish a connection with the ABS or SRS systems. Would this mean my ABS control module is dead? Is there another module that both of these systems feed through for communication? I cannot figure out why I cannot connect to both systems. I have ABS and traction control off lights on dash (TC on/off button has no effect), but I have no SRS lights on. Please help!

The ABS module and SRS module don't communicate through the OBD II connector on these, the only codes you can pull from there are from the PCM alone.

Here's how to read ABS codes

I just had the experience of needing to pull ABS codes recently, and I want to share the info. The actual ABS diagnostic connector is an OBD1 style connector with 3 wires. Turn the car off, and remove the connector so you have access to it. The Pins are arranged as follows:

----1--2---
3--4--5--6

Pin number 2 is a black ground wire, and pins 4 and 5 are the only other wires on the connector. They are green and white IIRC. Connect these two pins to each other and leave the ground alone. Turn the key on, and watch the ABS light blink to get the code number. Voila.

No trips to Autozone, no fancy diagnostics needed.

Anywhere in general I should start checking for this ABS code 17? I've cleaned all connections I could find for the ABS system inside the drivers inner fender, and taken apart and cleaned all wheel speed sensor connectors. I don't really have the money to just throw parts at the prob until it goes away.. so where should I start? Pump? Valve body? Relay? Controller? This is only my third vehicle equipped with ABS, and the first that it wasn't functioning properly, so I'm not really sure where to go from here

17 Reference Voltage/Intermittent Valve Fault
Possible Source(s):
� 30 amp fuse open. - ck good at 30 Amp fuse

� Intermittent connections to battery, main relay or ground.
Connections to battery are good, main relay seems to have power all the time on 537, 601, and 57 checks good from relay to ground
� Main relay coil or contacts open.
Not sure How do I ck this?
� Open or short to ground in Circuit 532 (O/Y).
Possibly as I only have 0.6 VDC at 532 on pump motor relay with main power relay installed and key on
� Open or short to ground in Circuit 599 (PK/LG).
Need to check this one
� Open or short to ground in Circuit 601 (LG/PK).
This one checks good all the way to pin 19
� Short to ground through anti-lock hydraulic control unit.
Possibly...not sure how to ck this one.
� Intermittent valve failures.
Possibly...not sure how to ck this one either.
� High resistance valves.
Possibly...Will ck ASAP.

I found that as well, however I had concerns as to the wiring circuits to check being different since it's a different vehicle. I will check again but I have checked the relays under the hood and the fuses under the dash.

Is the relay inside the wheel well the "main" relay? And is there a way to test this part?

I was hoping that this is a somewhat common issue, that had common culprits, as the level of possible faults for this one code still leaves it pretty well a crapshoot. :/
