V6 custom cat-back install, pics inside. SOUND too now

So I got me one of these dual systems off Ebay. Very simple pipes.

Knowing the V6 is a dog, I decided to use just one side and opted to do the right side. Here is the factory setup.

Here they are side-by-side

Now here is what I planned to do with the 2 into one muffler. 2 1/4" S-bends into Xlerator muffler with 2 1/2" outlet.

Since I cannot offset the muffler due to clearance issues, I decided to offset the right side pipe. I cut the one bend off and flipped it around. This allowed me to slip it back over the pipe and draw the tube to the right and then cleanly insert it into the muffler

Once I had it close I overlayed it to give you an idea of how it would route under the car compared to the factory exhaust. Of course it is routed out the right side of the car.

As you can see the 2 1/2" pipe is much larger than factory 2" crap.
I currently just have this run out the back end with a slash cut tip at the bumper. This is not too loud, sounds pretty good at WOT and the sound inside the car is not too bad. I am going to run it like this until I decide whether to put a muffler or some other termination on to quiet it down. Since some carbon buildup is natural over time and can tame it down all by itself I am going to wait.

First impressions, mid range power seems to be increased. I can actually feel it pushing me back into the seat on WOT accel.

Very nice Richard! You didn't want to go with the dual set up?

Very smart. I like. Do you have some pictures of it mounted on the car?

Joe, the way I see it, I can sell the other half of the cat back to some other V6 owner and who can do the same thing. There is really no gain to be had by having duals anyway other than appearance and maybe a little different sound.

I will have finishing pictures up soon. I want to finish the backend and weld it up first.

It is a little droany right now so I'm going for putting a muffler in the back.

I'm thinking of either a two chamber flowmaster type or a straight thru like magnaflow.

Recordings to come too.

0-60 times went from 12+ secs to 11 flat at 6300 ft elevation.
More than a second shaved off in 0-60. what a dog though.

I decided it is too loud so I bought another muffler same one, am going to flip it the other way so it is 2.5" inlet and 2x2-1/4" outlets out the back.

I plan to pull it off this weekend and weld it all up so update is forthcoming.

Here is the recording
This is with a 2 into 1 muffler running out the back with open pipes and an oval 3" pipe on the last foot of pipe.
At all sounds are in neutral revving the engine except at 34 seconds there is a burst that is power braking in second gear.

There is another recording down further

Where on Ebay did you find those pipes? I've been wanting to do true duals for awhile but am not willing to pay the local rates for work I could do myself..

Check the For Sale forum, there's a thread called Mandrel Bent Exhaust. The link is there.

Here it is finished up before install.
The original first install was open pipe all the way back. Was loud but not droaning/resonating.
I found it had a serious droan with the muffler.
I reset all the hangers and made sure the weight was distributed over the hangers and it seemed to help get the droan down some. Still pretty loud though.

Not sure how to get rid of the droan yet.

Alright, more pictures and more info.
First, the info. The droan is mostly coming from the exhaust piping harmonic vibration. I got under the car and after feeling for it I found that there was a rebound harmonic that was basically making the system act like a guitar string.

I installed the system. Still using some clamps here for fine adjustment before final welding.

Before spending $$$ on expensive resonator tips or something I just went with the chrome turndowns.

To reduce the harmonic vibration causing the droan and other shudder feelings inside the car I started by installing a hanger sideways at the point where the crossbrace would have been. This greatly reduced the droan and overall quality of the sound in the car.

CLICK HERE for the latest sound recording. More mellow with the muffler added to the back. You can actually hear the sound completely drop out at :17 secs during run up of the rpms, so it is definitely cancelling out sounds with this final setup.

I just sprayed the muffler with flat black and it looks much nicer. The tips stand out more and the silver looked out of place on the car.

Thanks all,
The sound is really nice with a conical filter on the intake.
The whole sound is pretty mean and the acceleration is definitely better
