I got a line up on a long block for my '88 Turbo Coupe. It is supposed to have 95K miles on it, the turbo is included but not guaranteed. The motor is guaranteed for 30 days. The salvage yard will bring it to my work for $25 and they want $550 for the motor. I saw many for ~$350 but every one that I called about was gone.
Do you think I should go for it? I would like to drive this car out of my driveway but I don't know if 95K is too many miles for that price.

Dont know about the price (think the turbo on it is a decent portion of that price), but if it is in good shape 95k isn't anything. My 87 TC had 157k miles and I was pushing 18lbs with no issues....other than the TPS flipping out.

Thanks for the insight. I was wondering that myself but they won't sell the motor w/o the turbo.
On a side note, is the turbo "user rebuildable"? It would be nice to have an extra one laying around even if it needs to be rebuilt.

You can rebuild them, BUT I dont know if I would rebuild something that spins at 10k rpm. You can get the cartridges (basically internal assembly) fairly cheap on ebay all the time. Just replace the old one in the turbo and you will be good.

They spin alot faster then 10K. The t-3s on 83-86 spin at about 120K and the ihi's on the 87-88s spin at around 200K.

I think you can get rebuild kits for a moderate price. Try ebay, sometimes you can get good kits off of there.

Missed a zero on my revoloution estimate, thanks. You might just want to look for a T3, since it will be a nice improvment for ya....especially if everything is going to be out of the car.

I considered doing the T3 upgrade but I already have a '95 that I am modding the heck out of. Its looking as though I am going to just get the Turbo Coupe running and sell it.

550 for a 95k tc motor is too much. I wouldn't install a motor over 60k without taking the head off and inspecting it the heads are very prone to cracking. I bought one with 68k on it and the head was cracked.

price

i sold a 87 2.3 with a turbo it only had 45000 miles on it. i got 350. and the person came to pick it up. on the miledge note. mines had 285000 miles on the orignal motor but the secound turbo. these little buggers are tough. i have 2 95" a 97 '92 sport tbirdand an 89 sc w/V8 in it. my turbo coupe is still the most fun to drive with added bonus of 30 plus miles to the gal....that is when i actually can stay out of the turbo...by the way mine runs about 18lbs of boost, has done so for over 5 years now.

Thanks for the input guys. I was thinking in the back of my mind that $550 was way too much but I really wanted to get the car going. I went with my gut feeling and didn't buy that one.
Another thing that I have considered is throwing a carbed 302 or 351 in it but I think that would actually be more costly. I mean, that would require finding a motor and transmission, driveshaft, rigging up motor mounts, running new exhaust, plus all the unforseen things. I am sure that would take more than $550.
