I just replaced my cheap origianal plastic intake manifold on my 96 cougar 4.6 The car now idles at about 1500 rmp. I have took it completely apart and put new intake manifold gaskets and intake to throttal body gaskets in. No Difference. All vacumm lines are hooked up. Everything is just as it is as far as I can tell.
I got a used maniflold with the aluminum coolant crossover.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks in advance

Any check engine codes? I would check your IAC (idle air control) valve and Coolant temperature sensor.

My idle air control valve seems fine to me but I'm not real sure how you check it. The check engine light was on before this happens so I guess I'll have to get the codes checked out

Yup, you will most likely find your problem at the codes.

I had a very similar problem recently, the car would idle between 1500 and 2000. Replacing the IAC didn't change it, and cleaning the MAF didn't help, but then somebody on the board suggested that I check the TPS, so I popped the hood and kinda tapped the side of it a few times and I haven't had that problem since.

So, you might want to check the TPS if the other stuff doesn't work.
