i have 275/40/17s on my cobra rims. the cars lowered two imches and have air bags in rear springs. i kinda would like a taller side wall to kinda fill the gap. what size would be the next size up? does anyone think it will rub? thanks!

Only size I can think of that will fit a 17 is 285/40/17... I believe you need to roll the fenders to prevent rubbing since you're lowered.

You might not care (b/c you are looking at it from an aesthetic viewpoint) but:
Larger diameter tire = taller final drive ratio = slower acceleration.
Taller sidewall will also net you more sidewall flex and therfore potentially lost of contact patch area

Also FYI, stock tire diameter for an MN12 is about 27". A 275/40/17 is over an inch shorter than stock.

Hm don't know if I want to go as far as rolling fenders, I just wanted to fill up the space but don't wanna rub, more sidewall will flex more I guess but can't will em all.

I agree. 285/40/17. You won't need to roll the fenders if your shocks are firm and your suspension is solid.

Plug the stock size and the sizes you're considering in to the calculator here:

Well I used to run 235/60s on my sc rims filled up the gap very nicely by the calculator 285/40/17 is shorter but taller then the 275/40/17s I dont rub now, but since there taller should I be worried about them rubbing on the inside or outside?

There are two tires offered in a 275/50R17 (27.8" diameter), but I don't know how well they'll fit if you're lowered 2". I run that size on the rear with 245/45R17's up front, but I'll be switching to 255/45R17's up front in a few weeks.

Just noticed the last post.

A 285/40R17 is going to be ~3/8" wider and 5/16" taller than the 275/40R17's. If you're already rubbing now, going to a wider and taller tire isn't going to help matters.

Stock height for the factory 16's 225/60s come in at 26.62", the 275s come in at 25.66". That's a hair UNDER an inch shorter than stock
Meh, mine came with 215/70/15 which were more like 26.8" tall. So there!

Rod those 275/50's look great but being lowered I don't think that work, I'm not saying I'm rubbing now at all I just don't want to end up rubbing if I decide to go 285/40.

I didn't mean to say I rub now, I do not rub. I need to proof read before I reply

I guess it's because of the cowl hood and/or the wheel/tire combination but every time I see racecougars car it just looks "shorter" than other Cougars.

i run the same 275 50 17s on the rear that racecouger has and mine rub. Im only lowered 1 inch. Its not horrible, but when i have a full tank of gas and a passenger or two, its pretty bad. I need to roll my fenders.

Looking at this pic..

255/45/17 should be ok..That's just slightly more sidewall, and height than what you're running now..

Maybe give you a little more of a comfortable ride..I like the stance of your car just the way it is though..

Oh..Here's a random pic of 255/45/17 tires on 17x9 rims..Just to give you an idea what it looks like..

I hope that helps..

I just replaced the rear tires with 255/50/17s last week. They are a closer match to "my" stock height tires and fill the wheel well a little better. My car is not lowered.

This is my car with 255/45/17s last year.
