I want to find a 5.0 engine and rebuild it performance wise to swap into my 93 Lx. I know a pretty good amount about engines but I have no idea the world of performance mods. Theres all these different cams and lobe lenghts, pistons, lifters and other stuff. I wouldnt even know where to begin to pick and choose what to put on it and what not to. Im also in between buying a used block assembly, or just buying everything new. I know this is going to be costly but its something that I want work on. I guess im just looking for opinions and guidence on what would be the best route. Maybe some ideas on what would be good to get and what not to do. Any input would be great. Thanks.

Strikes me as a little odd that you would say "I know a pretty good amount about engines", but then need help with "different cams and lobe lenghts, pistons, lifters and other stuff" ... am I missing something, what is your area of expertise?

Anyhow, my advice on a 5.0 build up, would be to comb through the mustang forums and figure out what your goals should be and how much money you are willing to spend. Without those two key things up front, you can't start determining much.

How much money are you going to spend?

What I mean is that I have basic engine knowledge. Im new to whole fuel injection and everything controled by computer type motors. Im not sure what I can and cant do as far as performance mods. Having to adjust chips and change senors. I wrote that post in a hurry. As far as cost, I want build it up over time so cost isnt that big of a problem. I havent yet obtained an engine or donor car yet but im still tossing the idea back and forth. I wrote the post in a hurry; sorry about the confusion.

I was looking at the summit racing website and it looks like it would be almost cheaper to buy a pre assembled short block for $2000 other than try to buy them all seperate. Hmmmm.

You need to start out by reading everything you can. There's a few good books on modifying the 5.0 motor, and it'll help you a lot with your understanding, some of them go into theory pretty deep. www.jegs.com has a lot of books on the 5.0, maybe start by ordering that instead of performance parts, and get an understanding of what you're trying to do. Nothing worse than spending a lot of money on a project, and having mismatched parts, so it doesn't run very well for the amount of money you have in it. When you're new at performance, try to copy people's combinations that are proven to work, you can get like me later, and start trying some crazy stuff once you understand what changes do what to your engine. At least you're starting out with an engine that is cheap to get parts for, and there are many proven combos already out there. You could just get the Holley package deal, and work from there, since it's a matched cam, heads and intake, and also tells you what else you need to make it run right.
