I was driving earlier today and began to pull into my friends parking lot and all of the sudden, I lost my power steering and my check battery light came on, BUT MY CAR WAS STILL RUNNING!

I had no idea what was goin on so I popped my hood, and saw that my belt had came off, I put it back on and everything is now fine.

Has anyone ever had this happen, I thought it was very strange. Maybe if the belt had broke I could have understood, but it didn't.

Insight?

How old is the belt?
You can check the wear indicator on the belt tensioner to see if it is close to the stop. Also check to see if the tensioner, tensioner pulley and idler pulley aren't binding. My idler pulley is tight turning. I need to replace mine.

Edit: I wrote idler pulley but technically its the accessory drive belt routing pulley. The one above the tensioner (on the 4.6).

I'd bet that 2 months ago, when the belt was replaced, it was partially off a pulley. And it took this long for it to work its way completely off.

Just a guess though, if the tentioner is ok.

Well.....It happened again this morning on my way to work......mind you in the POURING friggin rain! I asked in my last post how to tell if the tensioner is going bad, no one awnsered the question, now I need to find out. Cus this was one hell of a morning, trying to do this myself in the rain.

Thanks in Advance

Well...The tensioner is hard to move, it does take muscle, boy was it fun to do alone:(

Maybe 1 time I could believe the belt wasn't on correctly but 2, that's kinda pushin it.

Also I didn't metion in the first post that it was also drizzling and the ground was quite wet.

If the belt has good tension on it, moisture really isn't going to cause it to jump off the pulleys like that. tripple check the belt this time. 'cause if the tensioner feels okay.. and the belt is /all/ the way on the pulleys, I don't see why it should be falling off like that.

I've seen that happen before on vehicles with a lot of miles. The power steering pump worn and doesn't put out enough pressure anymore. So when you turn the wheel to it's full travel or close to it the pump can't keep up and stalls. Then the belt jumps off the pulley since everything else is still turning.

If you can move the tensioner by hand then it needs replaced. Other wise it should take a ratchet or tension tool to move it.
