I drive my 5.4 bird less than 4000 miles a year and recently flushed the radiator. The engine/radiator had about 6000 miles on them. That didn't help. The engine started running warmer and warmer. Eventually, it would almost overheat and I'd turn it off while coasting on the highway. I could go about 20 min before it got hot, and that's with the air off.

Finally I pulled out the 180 deg thermostat and put in a stock one. I also drilled a tiny hole in it to allow bubbles to pass. Ford's come with one from factory I think. It runs perfect again.

When I installed a replacement thermostat, I put a 1/16" hole in it. The holes on the Motorcraft OEM 'stats are rather small.

I don't know, it was probably 1/32. It was the 2nd smallest bit I have but the case that holds my bits is messed up. I can't see the size anymore.

After drilling it I found another hole with a ball check valve (tiny) on the side. I didn't really need to drill another one, but it doesn't hurt.

It runs much better now.
