What exhaust system?

2 choices, mostly based on cost.

1. TruBendz/Mandrel Exhaust Systems:
- will order in stainless steel, since car is a daily driver (cost $660 shipped).
- istallation @ muffler shop will be about $150.
- mufflers extra, about another $150.
- downfall: cost = $960
- upside: sound and flow.

2. Magnaflow High-flow Y pipe - pt. # 23343
- deleteing 3rd cat (cost of pipe $325)
- having 3" stainless mid-pipe (pinch) bent back to stock rear Y pipe and stock mufflers (cost of pipe and install <$200).
- upside: cost = $525
- downfall: sound and flow.

What do you guys think? Is it worth the extra $400+?

i would say it's worth the extra $400. cause once you start modding your car the exhaust is gonna thank you. thats just my .02

I have a 93 Mustang race car, so my 'bird is just for fun daily driving (my wife gets the tow rig). So, no modding besides a J mod and maybe UD pulleys...

If you can afford to, I'd say go with the more expensive version. If you're going to upgrade your exhaust, upgrade it.

Yeah, I can afford to, but hate to spend that kinda flow... Only reason I'm repacing, is my stock front cats have a few pin holes in them and the car sounds like **** now. I have a custom bent 2.25" true dual system, but it's a few winters old, if ya know what I mean. My stock rear mufflers/rear Y pipe is in my basement and in excelent condition, so this would be the "cheap" way out...

Hrm... if all you're really interested in is getting an equivalent replacement because your cats are going... I suppose I would probably go the cheaper way out too.

Despite the poll difference, I ordered the Magnaflow Y today. Guess my mind was sorta made up... Thanks fellas.

Update, I went with the Magnaflow high-flow Y pipe, deleted the 3rd cat, single 3" back to before the pumpkin, then split to 2.25" dual, to 4" round case Magnapacks w/ factory-style spouts. I talked to the muffler shop, and they said what I have is more than enough flow for a stock-headed 4.6, even if I add some boost later. The one manager races a 9 second Grand Nat'l, so I believe what he says...

Just got done driving it around for an hour, I can't get enough... It sounds awesome! First off, NO DRONE! Second, it's pretty loud when your on it, and quiet when cruising. Inside the tone is real throaty and noticable, but not obnoxious. Then I had my wife do some pull-aways in a local large parking lot, even more impressed. She did a part throttle and a WOT, both did not suck, I was smiling from ear to ear! Definitely sounds like a snotty V8 now. Throaty and a little raspy, but not bad (I hate SLP LM's).

I'll try to get some pics and maybe even a vid up shortly. I gotta do some work out in the shop tomorrow, so I'll try to get something...

Oh, BTW, I had it all done in 409 stainless. ;)

i think i would have done it differently. but more or less it breaks down to sound imho. mine with glasspacks and the stock muflers has a great idl burble and when i mash the hell out of the pedal sounds really sweet. but i would like a set of high flow cats and get ride of the y pipe and go true duals all the way through.

the exhaust guy was right. A 3" single and strait thru magnapacks could handle some stout hp. That exhaust could handle 400+ hp. The 3" is actually overkill on a stock 4.6L but not that big of a deal.

I had 2.25" true duals, with an X pipe and 40 series flowmasters. This was from the stock front cats back. That setup was WAY quieter than it is now. Those stock front cats must be REALLY restrictive... SOTP meter says I picked up low and mid range with this setup.

Yeah I agree, but the most important part, the high flow Y, is done. The first few feet of exhaust is the most important, and the mandrel-bent 2.25" tubung w/ high flow cats and Y section are the cat's ass. IMO...

Cost was a bit more than I anticipated, but they had to replace manifold studs and I had them put a custom ball and socket flange between the Y and the 3" mid-pipe. Plus they built the rear Y, as it was a last minute decision to do it that way (or I could have ordered the Maggy Y for $30). Plus it'll last forever, even in the Northeast, since it's all stainless again. ;)
