**UPDATE**What is a Cam Position Sensor...and again...More tranny problems...HELP!

Heres the rundown....I have a 94 SC Automatic...this transmission shop has had my car for the past 2 months...doing a rebuild. In that 2 months...theyve given it back to me around 6-7 times...saying it was done...and each time...within 1-2 days, Id have to bring it back. 3 of those times I had to tow it to them becasue it was undrivable. They have replaced all of the "hard parts" and electronics in my transmission including the valve body twice and the torque converter 3 times. Everytime I get it back, it runs fine at first...but after about 20 mins of driving...it starts shifting in and out of gears...ill be in 3rd...then it will drop to second and rev to like 3000rpm...then back into 3rd..and so on. Or ill be driving on the freeway and it will do the same thing with 4th and 5th...usually I can just pull over, throw it into Park then back into Drive and it will work again for a little while. Sometimes, if I come to a stop sign, I cant get it out of 1st gear, so I have to pull over...and go through the same routine. Some days it happens more than others...usually when Im not driving hard...just cruising. It seems to work better when I drive agressive..you know...lay into the gas a little harder then usual. Ok, so to the Cam Position Sensor...The last time they had my car, they said it was throwing a code... 214: Error in Cylinder ID circuit or signal, I was reading another post and people are saying it usually involves changing your CAM Position sensor...do you guys think that this could be the problem? If so...should the transmission shop be required to change this part or is it non transmission related. Ive never had this problem before the rebuild...I brought it in to be rebuilt for preventative reasons...and now my bird dying...someone Please Help me!

Thanks

All I can say is document everything. these guys sound like a bunch of tools.
I would say that your initial symptoms are MLPS related. did they put the right voltage solenoids in? '94 is way different than a current or even anything after '98 from what I have seen.

5th gear? Is this the original tranny? If so isn't there only 3 gears plus overdrive?

Anyways, I agree with Richard, make sure you document everything and keep all the receipts and papers, etc...

Would be worth plugging a tranny tester in and see if the trouble was in the PCM or wiring or in the tranny proper. I wonder if they left anything out of the valve body, and if they torqued it up properly, if its the right valve body in the first place. Those guys sound dangerous.

*UPDATE*

Ok, I brought it back in yesterday to install a new valve body(3rd one in 2 1/2 months) to bring it back to stock...ok, the 2nd valve body was new and I had them put a transgo shift kit on it(worked alright at times but still had shifting problems here and there) ..., oh well...back to the update, The guy calls me here at work today and tells me that my 2-3 shift doesnt work now...ARRRGGHHH! In the past 2 1/2 months heres what theyve done...

Rebuilt it 3 times
Changed the Valve Body 3 times (once with a shift kit)
replaced the MLPS 3 times
Replaced all of the hard parts
Replaced all of the electrical parts(so they say)
Drained and refilled with Mercon V (maybe some kind of universal blend) like 10 times
replaced the Torque Conv. 2 times
and I had to get it towed to them 3 times out of the 7 times it has been back

Out of all of this...I have had it back for a total of like 2 weeks...Im pissed. Its not throwing any codes...and theyre literally over there scratching their heads...

Did you look around good? There just had to be a Candid Camera crew there. This just could not happen in real life. Good luck.

Update

Ok...heres the deal...they hooked my tranny up to this manual shift box that bypasses my computer and they said it shifts fine. They told me that its either my Power Train Module or my Throttle Position Sensor...and they said if this doesnt work, its probably the computer. The thing is...Ive never had these problems before I did the rebuild...I had a problem with the 1-2 shift slipping...and now the 2-3 doesnt work...is there a posibility that they shorted something while the tranny was out? Do you think I can fight this in court? Someone...please give me some advice...Im over here stressing out off of this...I just want my car back.

Thanks

well hope and pray it's only the TPS.........they're like $35 or so............also,......if you have the car,.....try disconnecting it and see what happens,.....that'll narrow it down...sorry to hear that you have to go through all this hassle. Maybe they didn't torque down the valve body screws right? i dunno........good luck

EDIT (just re-read the whole thread)........are you sure they rebuilt the direct clutch?......when mine was going out my tranny had a delayed 2-3 shift and eventually wouldn't stay in 3rd......it'd "nuetral out"......if i turn off O/D it'd stumble then go into 4th,......i had some slipping as well.........had to do a manual shift from 2 or 1 then into D after i got it moving...........i agree w/ the others.......don't take it back to them,.....if you hear them talking big numbers,......get it somewhere else and try to get some of your money back.

**Update**

They replaced my TPS and my Computer (Power train module is located in the computer)...and guess what.....IT DIDNT WORK! Ihad it back for 2 days...then it dropped into 2nd gear while I was going 65 on the freeway...made a loud clunk...then had I couldnt shift passed 2nd....had to get it towed. So the owner of the shop says...It still has to be the electrical system...after they replaced all of the friggin electrical parts and hard parts, and tells me that he's calling in a electrical specialist...so the electrician checks it out...and says...No electrical problems...he thinks its hydraulic...man o man...I laughed. They are now looking for a rebuildable core..thinking there might be a small crack in the original case somewhere...I asked for a rental...they said no...life sucks

Tranny Troubles

From what I read in your original post, I would have to say (from personal experience) that it may be the MLPS.

A number of years ago I experienced the unexpected shifts between gears, mostly 3rd to 2nd, with the associated jump in RPMs. I was on a long, long trip and it got really bad, pulled into an AAMCO shop and sat there for about 4 hours while they ran all kinds of diagnostics. They couldn't find anything wrong and were giving me estimates on an overhaul. Finally, someone thought to call Ford Tech assistance, and the guy there (at Ford) said "Have you checked the MLPS? The '94s were bad for that." Turns out that's all it was, but it took like another hour for them to find a place in town with one in stock.

I hated that I lost 5 hours of travel time, but at least I didn't get socked with a $2500 tranny overhaul!

All this tranny work and it still doesn't function right? Personally, I think you are getting hosed big time!:D They probably overlooked the MLPS problem initially and, although it has been replaced since, now their "rebuilding" has screwed up what may have been a perfectly good tranny.

I hope you get it working again! Let us know about it.
