I know some early years like 94 - 95 were bad years for the 4r70W. What about 96 and 97? I also heard to look for a 99-01 trans from a GT for replacements.
I would like to know what the weak points are in each year of the trans.

94/5 for our cars were the weakest in the bunch. 96/97 made up some of the shortcomings in the previous years.. but if anyone ever needs to replace their transmission.. usually the 99+ is suggested. If I'm remembering right.. the oneway roller clutch and the mechanical diode are two of the bigger things. Check out Jerry's Transmission thesis in the Transmission section of the Technical Articles.. it covers just about anything you'd want to know about the 4R70W/AODE

The one way roller clutch and the mechanical diode don't exist in the same transmission. They both do the same thing. The mechanical diode one-way is the preferred piece because it's much stronger.
