Alright, i'm told by my mechanic that i need a new idler pulley, and i probably won't be in contact with him for at least 4 or 5 days so i'm just going to ask here. What exactly IS this thing, and where is it? I have a feeling i'm asking a stupid question but I wanna know so that I can do some pricing. Thanks a lot. Oh and if anyone can throw out some info about an "inner tie rod" and what THAT is, that would be greatly appreciated.... like if i'm going to need to have my car realigned after i replace it.... enlighten me my children :)

idler pulley is a pulley on the front of the engine that helps keep tension on the drivebelt.

Very easy to change this one, anyone can do it with handtools in their driveway in no more than 30 minutes.

The tie rod is in the front suspension, not bad to replace, but I had air tools when i did mine, so that made it easier.

Is the idler pulley and the tensioner pulley the same thing or what? lol that wasn't quite enough info... i need ta know where it's at! lol. Also how expensive are any of these parts if you can remember off the top of your head?

well,
there is two different pulleys

the idler is to the left of the alternator pulley and below.

It is very easy to change.

The tensioner pulley is attached to the spring loaded tensioner. You have to decompress the tensioner, and remove the tensioner (along with the drivebelt), then you can remove the pulley which is attached to the back of the tensioner.

That too is very easy to change.

I think the idler pulley, and the tensioner pulley are the same size pulley, and I think mine cost like ten bucks.

so what you're saying is that the idler pulley is attatched directly behind the tensioner arm? Like it isn't the actual pulley but it's behind the base of the tensioner arm? If that's the case than i can see it wouldn't be too bad to get to. Thanks for anymore input you give.

An Idler pulley is ANY pulley not connected to an acessory. The pulley at the end of the tensioner arm is an "idler" and there is also one other on the the 3.8 that is just bolted to a bracket. They are install to help put more Belt contact surface, "belt wrap", on an acessory pulley to prevent belt slipage. They ALSO can be used to prevent the belt from rubbing on something.

If you Change your Inner Tierod ends you NEED to get a front end alignment.

So the little one that's right next to the alternator isn't an idler pulley.... lol i just took that one off.... hmmm i dunno. Anymore comment's? lol

the one next to the alternator is the other Idler pulley, I just went out and looked at my car, the one directly to the passenger side of the alternator.

the idler for the 4.6 is only $20.. yours should not be much different

<~~~~ 3.8L Walien :) Anyways i've looked closer at the idler pulley's and they look frickin fine to me... i dunno i'll have to see this weekend.
