I was wondering what the difference between my 1997 Thunderbird 4.6L SOHC motor and that of a 1997 Mustang 4.6L SOHC.

Also, are the internals of a 99 GT motor forged or not?

I'm trying to determine if I should build up my motor with PI heads and intake as well as some other goodies, or if I shouldn't waste my time and money and just go for a motor swap.

Thank you very much.

oil pan, exhaust manifolds, and a horse on the plenum. The engines are basically the same. No, the PI motors are not forged unless they are factory blown(Lightning and 03-04 Cobra).

The pistons in the Lightning are forged..but the roads are still the ****ty old powdered metal rods.

I thought the Mustang engine was a Windsor and ours were Romeo blocks, something about the motor mounts being different???

Someone set me straight.

Thanks

'99-'00 were the only Windsors in Mustangs.A few carryovers in '01 as well. After that-the car engines all went back to the Romeo plant.Mustang mounts have always been differnet from a TBird, and are the same-Windsor or Romeo.

Do you mean the monting position on the block or just the mount itself?
The mount itself. They all bolt to the block in the same location.

Ah yes...

The strong bottom end of the WINDSOR 4.6L block.

4-bolt main caps with dowel pins. To bad the pistons and rods are junk.

You will actually get much more power putting PI heads and intake on your stock bottom, then swapping in a PI motor. By putting PI heads on the NPI block the compression ratio goes from 9:1 to 10:1, and that makes a huge difference.

I had no problem keeping up with the PI engine swap guys here in Florida with just drivetrain and tire upgrades to my '96 NPI bird, but I had to do a heckuva lot more to keep up with Eric Z. and his PI headed NPI block bird, he turned low-mid 13's with unported heads and bolt ons.

what are the 96 97 head casting numbers? is it the f5ae casting that are very popular?

also heard that jl once mention before that ported npi head flow more than pi head and more power, but if ported the npi head isn't that's mean still the stock compression? even though the pi couldn't ported to outflow the npi head but isn't there's some advantage at the 10:1 comp ratio?

also wonder approximate number of increase hp and torque with pi head on npi block with and without pi intake.

The NPI heads can be ported to outflow even ported PI heads, depending on who's doing the porting. Porting NPI heads doesn't affect the CR.

When you put PI heads, ported or un-ported on a stock NPI bottom end, you gain a point of compression, and yes it makes a big diference. But it isn't just the CR that gives the gains, you are also putting a PI intake on and PI cams.

Altogether it will take an NPI engine with bolt ons to around 230rwhp.

already have pi cam and pi intake sitting at home.

porting the npi is not an option for me now because of the price + downtime. slap a pi head even unported will still gain me some hp(one up comppression) + less downtime. cheaper to buy pi head for me too and guessing tranny will not hold up too much hp because of my mileage. agree?

just wan some clarification....

edit from the bottom cause maybe something weird going on but different font and guess something is not right?
