I am considering so 16" OEM wheels for my 40th anniversary Bird. It's the Misty Rose color.

I am wanting to stay with the 16", so I don't have to replace the speedometer gearing.

I don't know about going to 17" rims, in as much as what I'd have to do etc.

I would like to see pics of wheels, with the year of car, etc. Pics would be great.

Discussion over going to 17" wheels would also be entertained.

As long as the tire diameter matches, there would be no need to change the speedo gear for 17s. A 255/50/17 is an almost perfect match in diameter to the stock 225/60/16s. That being said, there really are no factory 17" wheels that would be a direct bolt-on swap without doing a hub swap to the mustang bolt pattern. If you aren't planning on running 13" brakes, the 16s are cheap, look good, and tires are cheaper for them, and as far as what looks best, I would reccomend the 89/90/96/97 Cougar XR7 7-spokes.

Actually, a 245/50/17 is almost exact fit, at 26.7" OD vs the 26.6" OD of the 225/60/16. It would fit on a 17x8" wheel fine. The speedometer would be .2mph faster at 60, which isn't enough to even worry about.
The 255/50/17 is a 27.1" tire, and would throw the speedometer off quite a bit.

There are a great many aftermarket wheels in the 17x8" size with a 5x108 bolt pattern with a favorable offset, a 17x8" wheel with a +40 offset will stick out .4", which is very easy to deal with on our cars, and shouldn't cause any rubbing issues. You would need to worry about inner clearance if you have a remote oil filter kit, but as long as it's tucked under the inner wheelwell, you should be fine (my 255/50/16's do fine).

I honestly don't know either, I just plug the numbers into the website and it'll tell you what the tire size ends up being.

I generally find something that works, and look to see if it exists. Rule of thumb is that for every inch of diameter you go up, you reduce your aspect ratio by 5%. I haven't figured out the correlation between tire width and aspect ratio when increasing diameter and width, but with a little plugging it works out eventually.

If you switch to 17's with the correct size tire, you may notice that it looks like you have more wheel well gap. The smaller tire sidewall will give that appearance. However 17's aren't much of a difference so it may not be too noticeable. 18 or above will be very noticeable though.

Personally I plan on 17 or 18 for my cougar, so going to drop it about an inch to even it out.

Also the 16" 7 spoke Cougar wheels are really nice. They do have center caps though which I am not a fan of; otherwise I'd be keeping mine.

If you want to stick with the 16 stock size, go with the tires i went with, i love them. Goodyear Eagle Sport A/S. V rated tire in 225/60/16. Ride great, handle great, 50k mile warranty on them. They look great on the car, the sidewall design is classy on the t-bird size, some tires look weird due to them scaling it up to fit the large sidewall.

LOL, I remember when a 225/60/16 was considered "low profile".

I think chrome '96/'97 Thunderbird Sport rims would look really nice!! Or chrome '94/'95 fan blade rims but those are 15's :frown2: I also think the cobra R or saleen rims would look good but the smallest available for our cars are 17x9.
