well, 94-97 = non pi heads
pi heads = 99+

so 94-97 non pi heads does not equal pi heads. so no the aed for 94-97 will not work on a pi headed car without modification.

well the compression for the 94-97 4.6L with the PI heads is something like 10.2-10.4:1...not exaclty blower firendly. Although, Allen has a REV II kit for the PI motors..if A-Train chimes in he could help more.

If you put PI heads on a non-PI motor the compression goes up to over 10:1 like was stated. The REV II kit is for PI motors which the compression is 9:1 or 9.4:1 depending on which PI motor you have.

You can use the PI heads safely IF you rebuild your motor with PI parts( not recommended ) or rebuild your motor with forged parts that will give you a 9:1 compression with the PI heads.

I presented this same question to Allen a couple of days ago. I have an 02 Explorer engine with PI heads going into a 94-T-Bird. This was Scott from Allen Engineering's reply:

John,

Well, this seems like a tough decision, but you really only have one choice: the REV I kit. It will work with PI heads without modification or you can port match the inlet runners for better flow. (not required)

Scott

Mike Siska and A-Train both are running their PI engines with REV I kits. Reading some old posts I believe they both port matched the inlet runners. I am sure Anthony will post with better info when he sees this post.

Just relaying what I found out. Hope it helps.

moore89,

Yes you can use the REV-I AED kit with PI heads. You simply must open up the runners or get pre-opened ones from AED. The older REV-I kits could not do this since the runners didn't have enough material that could be safely removed. The new kits have enough material to do this.

You do not want to run PI heads on a stock '94-'97 4.6L ROMEO block, unless you go with custom forged pistons and rods. Otherwise, the C/R will be to high and the bottom end of the engine won't hold up. You'll most likely break a piston ring land and you won't be able to run more than 6 psi of boost on pump gas with the Eaton.

Thunderterd,

First, PI heads on a stock '94-'97 4.6L ROMEO block will get your in the range of 10.5:1 C/R. That means cylinder pressure is too high. Regardless if you run 1 psi of boost or 20 psi, you'll always be playing with fire. Add 10.5:1 C/R and you're asking for trouble.

Second, I run stock PI heads with an AED kit. I have a FACTORY stock 2000 4.6L GT engine and 9.0:1 compression. Two years now and it sees 10 psi of boost. Last year it ran high 12's @ 108 mph with the best of a 12.802 @ 109.45 mph. This past April, it went high 12's again. Will it last forever, hell no, but you can run PI heads with an AED kit. Plus it's my daily driver.

VicRattlehead,

Yes it will. It won't go as per the install manual for non-PI set-ups, but it can be done.

Cam94,

Yes, the newer AED REV-I kits have enough material around the runners so you can hog them out. You'll need a Bridgeport and an endmill or a CNC machine to be right on the money. Use the PI gasket and Dykem lay out paint to open them up correctly.

Now for all, this is the difference between PI and Non-PI AED runners.

Hey A-Train, if you have 00' PI heads, and your C/R is at 9.0:1 why are the other PI's at 10.5:1?? Sorry, I'm not very inclined to this subject.. ?

A-Train is running 9.0:1 compression with PI heads because he has a PI Motor. The 94-97 cars have 10:1 CR with PI heads because the factory pistons are flat tops and the heads are smaller. comprende?

So pre-opened runners are available from AED? Since the PI swap is so popular for our cars, I would think think that AED would offer the PI runners as an option for the T-Bird kit at an extra charge.

Cam94,

You can lay a PI intake gasket on the non-PI AED runners (provided they have the coil-on-plug provision mounts) and trace it. Then use a die grinder, port away. Best way is an end mill, but not everyone has access to such equipment. AED did a set of runners for me, but I doubt they'll offer REV-I PI runners as an option. See most people will swap the heads on a non-PI headed engine block and raise the C/R skyhigh, then blow the engine. That makes them look bad and not offering the runners gives them an insurance policy for such a situation.
