A guy is selling a diff, it's an alum diff, he says "They are FRPP gears with about 12000 miles on them. I had the gearset in a Mustang that i sold and parted out. The diff is a stock Mustang 8.8 limited slip installed in the aluminum housing. I planned to install it in a bird I have but never got around to it."

I know FRPP 8.8 gears fit any 8.8 diff, that's OK. I'm wondering about the Mustang TracLok....

So will this just bolt up? I don't know enough about the Mustang TracLok, will the number of splines be correct? He sent me a pic too, it looks good in the pic on the outside.

Thx.

I emailed the guy, I'll wait to hear back.

I have a friend who is a master tech at my closest Ford dealer. He said he'd loan me all the tools to do a gear swap on my current diff. And I found a video for $35 here: http://www.badshoeproductions.com/products.html

I'm sure he'd give me a hand too if I ran into problems. But he doesn't do work on the side unfortunately. He guessed it would be $700-800 in labor if I take my current car/diff to the dealer and pay them and have him do it...

Now I'm debating if I should just swap the gears in my known good diff. Sure it's iron but who cares, it's TracLok now and the 4.10 gears will make up for the weight difference between the iron vs alum case :)

Decisions, decisions...

Would it be worth while to go from an open diff with 3.08's to a trak-lok with 3.27's? I was thinking of waiting to get some 4.10's for it but if its going to be a night and day difference then I will go ahead and throw it in there and get the 4.10's later after I get it ready for the retune. Would the speedo gear or tune have to be changed immediatly with that little bit of step up? Thanks guys.

It's not worth the time or money to go from 3.08 to 3.27 in my opinion. You will barely even feel the difference. If you were thinking of paying someone to install the gears, don't even think about it. If you have the differential together and it doesn't cost you anything, then sure.

Going up that one step is an increase of 6%. Going from 3.08 to 4.10 is an increase of 33%. There is a night and day difference between 3.08 and 4.10. Don't fear the gear! 3.73 would also be quite fine for your car. There are tons of threads on here as to which gear to go with, but 3.27 isn't something you should be talking about unless you have a 5-speed or supercharger :)

I went from 3.08 to 3.27 and you feel the difference. I'm sure it's nothing like going to a 3.73 or 4.10, but at least you feel better take off and pick up. Oh, and yes, I had to swap my speedo gear because it was off like 5 @ 60 mph.

I thought that it wouldnt be worth it either to begin with. It may not have on a stock SOHC but then I got to thinkin it may be different with the DOHC. May have a little bit of traction issues but thats the fun part right? :)

Oh, DOHC... I guess it would be a little different since the engine has more power/torque. What have you got in there for a torque converter? That would make a difference too.

It's pretty much stock (I'm only making 180rwhp). A few bolt-on's, but when I swapped the gears, I don't think I had any of them installed yet (maybe the U/D pullies only).

You swap to 3.27 and do a j-mod, your car will be a lot more fun to drive.

yup... peelin the tires off in 1st, and a good chirp into second is always fun to me, no matter how much hp you have imo;) when I went from 3.27 open to 3.73 traclok, and a jmod on my old bird, it was a good little jump from stock.

I doubt you'll notice a big difference however I'm sure you'll like the two wheel peel instead of the one tire fire. I'm running 3.27TL on my 4v and I agree with what most others recommend.

3.73's if you do a lot of highway.
4.10's if you drive a lot of street or even mix.
4.30's if you almost never drive highway and want the real deal acceleration the 4v needs.
4.56's if you want to weekend race it or be the stop light king (NOT THAT WE CONDONE THAT!!!)

Once your above 3k your in the b-head powerband (secondary intake manifold runners are open). I shift at 6300 to stay there after the shifts. However with 4.10, 4.30, or even 4.56 you'll be there right away, of course you'll also need a retune, shift points changed, and highway mpg will suffer approx 2-7 mpg depending on conditions, speed, driver, tires, etc...

Also something to consider 4.10's and up will require a speedometer recalibration device as well as a retune.

I choose to go 3.27 because of my future mods (force fed) and maybe... just maybe TR-6060.... time will tell. My 4v is far from done. It's just breaking in :evil3:.

But.... my 4v is on daily drive detail until my SC project reaches completion, but that's going to be a whole different beast. Over-driven intercooled, meth injected M90. :diablo:
