90' Thunderbird Super Coupe - Loud pop/creak when turning at low speeds

Hi all,

Prefacing this by saying I have read through the sticky and about every thread I could find on the topic with no conclusive answers...

I have a really loud sound coming from the passenger wheel well area. It only happens when turning at low speeds. When turning, it starts out with a few metal sounding pops, then as I move through the turn or cut the wheel further it becomes a sort of grinding creaking sound very much like a door hinge in need of grease.

For some background, the suspension in the front was redone maybe 15k miles ago by the previous owner. Looking at the suspension myself, everything seemed to be in good order. The tie rod ends are solid, a bit of play but no clicking/clunking, and the sway bar end links as well are in good condition. They look pretty much new.

So far I have torqued everything to spec, including the subframe bolts, and I have replaced the lower control arm on that side.

Someone from sccoa suggested it may be the wheel bearings. Is there a way to test this? The bearings seem fine when spinning them, and I never had any of the usual bad bearing symptoms while at speed.

Besides that, I'm not quite sure where to go beyond a full front-end rebuild. Anyone experience anything similar, and what was the fix?

Thanks and have a good one all!

Sounds like ball joints (control arms). How do the strut rod bushings look? Only supercoupe performance sells the good rubber ones.

If it was a wheel bearing, it should do it all the time instead of just when turning.

Put it on a rack with the suspension loaded and start prying on the suspension to see if there's any excessive play.

Wheel bearings .. put a wheel in the air and rock it up and down to see what condition it is in.

Also check the rack mounting / inner tie rods.

I think it might be a tie rod end in my case?
Here are some pictures of the suspension components:

Now, I think its possibly a tie rod end. I took a video of the pass. side tie rod end (took the boot off first) - It's pretty floppy. Inner tie rod seemed fine.

Only other thing I noticed being off was that on the passenger side, the brake rotor seems to move independently of the bearing/studs behind it, unlike the driver's side.

So...I'm thinking the tie rod end is the culprit. Not sure what's up with the rotor, though. Searching it up, it seemed like it was normal? Any ideas, and also would anyone agree that the tie rod end looks bad?

I have those blue "poly" strut rod bushings, and they make a creaking sound. Got some new rubber ones from supercoupe performance, waiting to install.

Do all of the joints have grease fittings, and grease in them? I can't imagine a tie rod end making a noise like that, but who knows. Easy enough to replace. Have to count the turns, and still probably need an alignment.

I wouldn't trust any of that suspension (sway bar end link) with the blue grease covers. Where's the grease? There should be excess grease seeping out all around them, with dirt stuck to it.

Interesting. I did play with the sway bar end links by hand and I didn't notice any slop in them, but I might just replace them anyway. I have the tie rod ends coming soon and if that doesn't fix it I'll be doing those (and maybe the bushings) next. I'm pretty confident the sound isn't coming from the poly bushings themselves because of how loud it is. It's like "hear it around the block" loud.

Mine only makes the creaking sound pulling into the driveway.

Sway bar end links rattle when going over bumps at 25 MPH. Easier to hear driving thru the neighborhood.
