When I first start it up , I have to manually shift it up through the gears and it works fine. If I put it in drive and give it gas it just barely moves. If I put it in 1st, it takes off normally. I have a 94' Cougar with a J-Mod tranny, chip. After I have been on the road for awhile, it will shift normally most of the time. What could be the problem? I leaky valve body? I have 140,000 miles on that tranny.

Thanks

Have you ever replaced the MLPS (manual lever position sensor)? the 94s are known for water leakage problems and will cause erratic shifting. I think both bulkpart.com and NAPA supposedly have cheap replacement sensors that work well. 140k on a 1994 trans is pretty amazing, dont expect it to live forever though.

I did the Jerry Mod about 3 years ago and added a tranny cooler. That was at about 85,000 miles. Yea , I have done pretty good on that old tranny. Nope, I have never replaced the MLPS sensor. It could be just that?
