Trouble code P1000 and P1151....

My buddy's cougar keeps throwing these two codes. We have tryed a few different things for the 1151 (bank 2 indicates lean condition) code, but that P1000 (OBDII Moniter testing not complete) is a new one for me. Even my auto tech teacher don't know what it is. I hooked he car up to the scan tool today at school to try and diag. the problem, came to find out the car will go into closed loop in a min but goes back into open loop while at operating temp. So it was kinda hard to check the o2 sensors voltages since it wouldn't stay in closed loop. So can someone give me some info on that P1000 code?

Thanks!

p.s. the P1000 won't clear either....

For the P1000, Did you or him run the car through the OBD-II drive cycle? There's a special procedure you must follow for it to complete it's tests. It's listed near the back of the manual. I don't remember exactly what the steps are...

For the P1151, Not sure... It may not be the case for him, but when I had that code, my O2 sensor for that bank was bad. Replaced it, and the code stayed away, but there are other things that could cause that. Vacuum leaks, I think can do that, if an injector is stuck open, I would think it could show up as lean... just my few ideas.

LOL... ignore the P1000, I get that code with almost EVERY car I put a scan tool on and it means nothing. Basically, it is telling you that the ECM has not gone through a complete drive cycle where it can test all of it's systems. I believe the drive cycle is: drive the vehicle at 25 mph for 5 miles and then 55 mph for 5 miles. It is almost impossible to do without breaking all kinds of traffic laws which is why most techs don't even try(hell, most don't even know it exists):D . Like I said, just ignore it... and if your entering into the field(mechanics) which is what it sounds like, you'll see it A LOT.

Even my auto tech teacher don't know what it is.
Now that scares me...

The P1000 code is generally ignored if it's found in KOEO and KOER tests (from the 1996 PC/ED: DTC P1000 is ignored in KOEO AND KOER Self-Test. Disregard the P1000 and continue as directed.) If it's in Continuous Memory, there's a routine to follow, which, depending on how you follow the routine, directs you to the OBDII Drive Cycle to clear the code:

As for the P1151 code, here's some info from the 1996 PC/ED manual:

H40 DTCs P1131, P1151, P1132 AND P1152: UPSTREAM HO2S(S) NOT SWITCHING. DTCs P1130 AND P1150: FUEL SYSTEM NOT SWITCHING AT THE ADAPTIVE LIMITS (RICH OR LEAN)
Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P1131 bank (1) (Cylinder #1) and P1151 bank (2) indicate the fuel/air ratio is correcting rich for an overly lean condition. The HO2S voltage is less than 0.45 volt. DTCs P1132 bank (1) (Cylinder #1) and P1152 bank (2) indicate the fuel/air ratio is correcting lean for an overly rich condition. The HO2S voltage is greater than 0.45 volt.

DTCs P1130 and P1150 indicate the fuel control system has reached maximum compensation for a lean or rich condition and the HO2S is not switching.

DTC/HO2S Reference List

HO2S-11 = DTCs P1131, P1132 and P1130
HO2S-21 = DTCs P1151, P1152 and P1150
Possible causes:

Fuel system:

Excessive fuel pressure.
Leaking fuel injector(s).
Leaking fuel pressure regulator.
Low fuel pressure.
Contaminated injector(s)

Induction system:

Air leaks after the MAF.
Vacuum leaks.
Restricted air inlet.
PCV system.
Fuel purge system.
Improperly seated dip stick.

EGR:

Leaking gasket.
Stuck open EGR valve.
Leaking diaphragm.

Base engine:

Oil overfill.
Cam timing.
Cylinder compression.
Exhaust leaks before or near the HO2Ss.
Check air intake for leaks, obstructions and damage.
Check air filter, air filter housing for blockage.
Verify integrity of the PCV system.
Check for vacuum leaks.
